In the last issue of Wired (I forget which version #) there was a good article on this. The avarage person can not afford a copy of windows, so everything is pirated. The government does not inforce any crack downs on piracy. China perfers windows over linux becuase its easier navigate and learn, while linux is more difficult because of lack of Chinese characters and its a little less user friendly.

If the government inforced its laws on piracy, the people would have no choice but to go to linux.

Their are linux compaines in China that are making it more Chinese friendly, i forget the names of the companies, and I have know idea on how well they are doing.

I agree with Katz on this. Very good article. If you do not vote, you are saying "I can not be bought", "I want honesty". I'm tired of political tv adds saying has done this for the economy, and helps our communtiy. Then the very next commercial says the same person increases taxes, health care and voted for killing the first born child of every parent. How fucking stupid do they think we are?

These ads read like freakin infomercials. People argue that you should vote for the lesser of the two evils, I understand this thinking, but I personaly believe I make more of a difference by not voting for this trash.

Thank You! I feel the exact same way. There is to much amazon.com bashing at slashdot. I'm tired of seeing every post end with "now if they just drop their patent I'll shop there again", guess what? I've heard that a biggilion time now and I don't care and I'm sure a lot of others don't care either. Amazon provides an execelent service, good luck trying to find the information they provide, customer service, and low prices in the offline world.

I really wouldn't call it being Paranoid. I to believe that it is good being causious, but I also think that the good people hear at slashdot are targeting Amazon.com .. when Amazon should be the least of their worries when it comes to privacy. You can opt out by sending and email to never@amazon.com. Good reading "Your Secrets Our My business" touches quit a bit on companies including our government selling information on you all the time. The author sugests a notification system, where you are notified when your information is sold.

I had to reply to this whole article. I love Slashdot and its people, but my God .. you people just love to bitch at stuff a little to much.

First off, there is lots of information being passed around on you as we speek. There is NO notification that you get when this happens, and there is nothing you can do to stop it. Its to late your information is out there being analized, sold and reanized all the freekin time. No company ever tells you when they sell you informaion - this also go's for the government.

Amazon.com is the only company decent enough to let you know what they are doing with your information, and yes if you don't like there policy then you don't have to shop there. That's why the sent out the press release in the first place, but to bash Amazon.com because its doing what every other company does (including the Government) is just plain retarded. You don't see any other companies with the guts to do what Amazon has done... so give the company some damn credit, even you never buy something from them again.

Get a life bra! Walmart or costco probably has more info on you then Amazon. There is information being passed around on you like you wouldn't believe. At least Amazon is informing you of what there doing, how many other companies can you say that about?

They gave you a polite warning, and they were very open with what they are doing with all the info they collect. There are other companies that have information on your ass as well and probably will never notify you when they trade your information. I suggest you read the book "Your secrets are my Business" to find out what companies are really doing with your personal information. Amazon is proably the only one that cares enuf to inform you what they are doing. So tell me again how are they miss behaving?

Screw Adobe. There bitter because they were used to being the leader in their market, so they just were sitten back and watching the cash flow in with their thumb up their asses. Mean while when Macromedia first came to be they were low key (smart) developing some serious inovative tools and visuals for the web. Adobe Photoshop is a good product, but like Micrsoft Office, it is way over priced.

Considering the history of the world, YES Amazon.com is pretty damn amazing. I personaly don't care for time magazine, and would have to agree that they are cashing in on the tech hype. "Man of the year" is just a phrase that doesn't mean to much to me, but I do think that Jeff has done some pretty amazing stuff.

Today we think of investors as daytradin freeks with no loyalties to a company. Apparently a lot of people want Red Hat to do well or they just wanted to get rich quick. :)
