If you actually believe that The GIMP can compete with Photoshop, then you've never used either one it seems. GIMP lacks many of the powerful features that make Photoshop what it is. A list of what is in each app will immediately show vital tools missing from GIMP. In fact, with the exception of paths and a few scripting abilities, you can get the same results out of Photoshop Elements, which is the stripped down version of Photoshop.
Great for linux users, and people who can't afford the $800+ Price tag of Adobe products, however for a real power-user in the gfx field, it's a tinker toy.

Now as far as the book above goes... They're really interesting things for beginners to do, but more advanced users would find the content a bit "below their skill range".
"I worry about someone who would play Grand Theft Auto for ten hours a day. It's a masturbatory activity, and it would be better if people put down the controller and went outside."
So if I play nothing but GTA I'll grow hair on my palms and/or go blind?
So we're to raise our kids without toys (even kids in the dark ages had toys), within a church community (I'm sure those atheist kids are indestinguishable from the theist kids in 90% of all situations), with a stay at home parent (despite the fact that many parents who both work outside of their homes can manage to raise children properly), and being a common sense parent (the last point, #4 is about the only thing I agree with)?
Parents don't need to be sequestered from society and remain at home to have children, there are plenty of parents who know family comes first and make time every evening (after school and work)to spend with their children. These parents are also working to support their children in most cases, so without them working, can they support them? I doubt it.
There is also no need to deprive the child of entertainment. We don't need little zombies who are deprived of all social interaction because they don't have some sort of entertainment, be it a computer/ console or simple toys. Your "rules to live by" are so rigid and uptight, I'm surprised that, if you even have kids, your children would know how to interact in a social environment outside of the closed and fenced in one you've made for them.
Children are meant to play and have, not to be locked up in a prison in their own home in fear of some vestigial boogie-man is out to get them. This doesn't mean they should be allowed to run around unchecked, to the point where we need the government to look after them (again I agree with you on this) but they shouldn't be locked down either.
I'm not sure if it's the old cars that have anything to do with it. I mean, look at those old people (not "senile old", but old enough to have experienced a different generation of "bricks on wheels") who take to the road these days. A vast majority of them are as wreckless as a teenager who's just learning to drive, if not worse. I worked for an insurance company and some of the wrecks I saw just made me wonder about the drivers. Then we'd get their ages, and, as I said, a majority of them were in their 60's and 70's. It really has not that much to do with the cars, in my opinion (although the systems do play a part), it has everything to do with driving habits.
Older cars were solid, which meant you didn't have to be as safe as these days. You could hit a brick wall and back up, go get a new paint job, and be driving later that day. These days, you hit a brick wall and you need to get a new car. They had to build the new systems in to compensate for the "crumple" in the new cars or people would be dying left and right from driving like they used to in the old cars.
I think it's about time for me to get a degree in patent law. These lawyers must just be giggling all the way to the bank with these idiotic cases.
Lawyer: "You want to sue IBM? Why?"
Idiot: "I invented computers, they stole my idea!"
Lawyer: . o O ( $$$ BIG MONEY $$$ ) "Sure I'll take the case; however, you still have to pay if you don't win."
Idiot: "I don't care, I'm gonna win!"
Lawyer: . o O ( $$$ NEW HOUSE! $$$) "Alright, let's get the paperwork done!"
I'll still be in prison for pirating movies (along with my grandfather, Robert "Fingers" Malone) by the time my porn collection degrades... I am saddened and dismayed.
I spend about 20 hours or more in front of a monitor (either at work or at home). And, although I am nearsighted, I've not had a decrease in vision quality, and this 20+ hour habit has been going on for a good 8 years or so. I think it has to do entirely with a few distinct factors.
A major issue that many overlook is monitor angle. If the monitor is angle directly at your eyes then you will be getting more "direct light" whereas if you're looking at your monitor from a downward angle, the light is not directly being shone into your eyes. (This is from my optometrist, so I don't know if this is fact, or if he's misinformed and I'm relaying bad info, but I can assume it's good info). Also natural light is a lot easier to look at a monitor with (open a curtain instead of using flourescent/ incandescent lightsources).
How does an old comedy book by an SNL writer become a video game (or at the very least, a video game manual)? Did they not RTFM and just automatically bring up good ol' Vid'agame McScapegoat? These people are supposed to solve murders and they can't even differentiate between a comedy book and a video game? Yikes... I guess I know where to commit crime now (better go practice with some GTA first, though).

So basically, we don't have the right to express an opinion on "how much Rupert Murdoch sucks the bag" (which seems to be the current one this week) anywhere (via electronic means apparently) without seeing the inside of a white-collar prison?
I didn't realize that INGSOC took over the internet...
If everyone was equal russia would have a stable economy, communism would work perfectly, and there'd be no poverty. So, I guess not everyone is equal. Frankly, the fact of the matter is that people who are "important" are more at risk (who really wants to read Joe Blow's cell phone records?)than Citizen X at any time. Important people being police/ military/ politicians/ government agents/ etc.

But really, what was the point of hacking livejournal? Did someone write some Linkin Park lyrics incorrectly and the hackers decided to correct them?

Just as long as Cleopatra doesn't distract Abe Lincoln too much... JFK might get upset.
It's awesome because it's been bought by AOL, you know, Awesome Online... The internet's largest provider of awesome internet experiences.

You should have also noted how many of Boll's films are on that list... ;)
Boll: 1) v. To render unviewable "He really Boll'ed that film" 2) adj. In reference to a sight too horrible to look at "That image is just Boll!"

Or we could always go the way of Mad Max... I mean, the US is already warring over Petroleum, it wouldn't be that huge of a leap ;)

You left out the most important of them all... ...The Alan Parsons Project.

Or they could have a life and this is used to have another one... A fake online one... Because they're greedy for life.
