  1. Re:Inconvenient on US Postal Service Discontinuing Saturday Mail Delivery · · Score: 1

I don't think they're talking about closing the PO on Saturdays, only cutting back on Saturday deliveries.

  2. The could cut back even further. on US Postal Service Discontinuing Saturday Mail Delivery · · Score: 0

" 'To erode this service will undermine the Postal Service's core mission and is completely unacceptable.'

Srsly? I get, perhaps, one letter per week that is even remotely relevant to me. Everything else goes in the trash. When it comes to letters, the postal service is just one big wastepaper distribution system. They could cut deliveries back to only three days per week, as far as I'm concerned.

  3. I'll take reliability over bells and whistles on Cooking Up the Connected Kitchen · · Score: 1

So, the manufacturers are listening to what we want, eh? Meanwhile my one-year-old Chinese-made refrigerator (is there any other kind?) already has a problem with the defroster -- a simple, well-known process that has been around for at least 50 years. My previous refrigerator managed to last for 17 years without a major problem. I don't want a lot of bells and whistles, I just want simple appliances which will work for more than a couple of years.

Every student should refuse to wear the badges. They don't have to destroy the badges or anything like that. Just get together and toss them in a big pile. Problem solved. They're not going to suspend every single student. Of course I come from the tail end of a generation where burning draft cards, holding sit-ins and other acts of civil disobedience were not such a foreign idea.

  15. Could be. on IQ 'a Myth,' Study Says · · Score: 1

I've always suspected this, at least to some extent. I've tried taking several IQ tests over the years. They seem to vary widely in the kinds of questions they ask. On IQ tests that focus on mathematical skills, I do not do as well. But on tests that focus more on language skills, I do really well. My scores vary a great deal depending on the test.

Nevertheless, I think IQ tests are good at indicating a general range of intelligence. It is just important to realize that different people excel at different mental aptitudes.

This is probably going to sound like a "get off my lawn" kind of post, but "augmented reality" bothers me. I go to baseball games and plays as an ESCAPE from reality. I don't want it "augmented" by screeds of information. I just want to enjoy the experience. Don't get me wrong, I think there are uses for augmented reality, but does life suck so bad for people that they cannot simply live it and enjoy it without cluttering it up?

The "article" (I hesitate to call it that) does not even describe the country that the alleged raid took place in, let alone the city. "Scandinavia" is not a country, but a loosely-defined region of countries, primarily Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, and depending on your definition, Finland and Iceland. I think the whole thing is made up.

Slashdot is really going downhill. The motto needs to be changed to "Rumors for Nerds; Stuff" period.
