    Indeed. Any time the government doesn't heavily tax something, it amounts to a subsidy.

    Does anybody see this kind of lunatic mindset the way I do and get a little worked up?

    Some people buy an SUV to haul around a mid-sized family. They could also use a mini-van, I suppose.

    Also, I suppose, you'd point out they are not being green by having a mid-sized family. Very well. Carry On.

    Perhaps he's using the 'big government' meaning of the word subsidy.

    Just like cutting taxes is referred to as 'increasing the deficit' the word for 'not taxing the price of gas up' is 'subsidizing.'

    It's a mindset of big government types.

    No. There's a gaseous reek, and not only have they set up special machinery at the Apple campus to pump out high volumes of the gas, but also the fans and enthusiasts of the gaseous reek have been drawn in.

    Apple didn't invent 'Not Invented Here' arrogance. It's even something they don't claim to have invented. But they've refined it a bit. And the real laugh about it is they couldn't even 'invent' a real multitasking OS. They had to buy a company (NeXT) that had produced one, far away from 'The Apple Campus Culture' in order to not just have their OS platform die.

    It's sort of a full steam ahead situation. Obviously they shouldn't be so stupid again*, but then, theyv'e gotta keep going on the same if they're not going to look bad for it.

    They've pretty much saturated the fashion-fanboy segment of the market. Let's see how well tbe sell to 'the rest of us' now. It's a turd of a design and the iPhone 5 will NOT be like it. Presuming there will be an iPhone 5, of course. There's a lot of momentum, but they're making their money in the high volume iTouch part of the market. And plenty of room for a big high gain antenna in the iPad. Likely it's not another Newton.

    Other phone case designs don't have the metallic antenna element designed in such a way that it comes into skin contact with the user in normal use! I mean jesus f christ, this is supposed to be a tech-nerd site, not a salon for fashion/design nancies to prance and strut and do their marketing dances.

    You apparently didn't watch the keynote where blow himself gushed about the clever integrated antenna/case design. It's one of those instances where they just couldn't get over how clever their 'design' was.

    sometimes science fiction novels end up in "Literature" instead of the "Science Fiction/Fantasy" section for example

    Some authors escape the SF genre/ghetto if they're really good. JG Ballard was one who did. William S Burroughs did also. Neal Stephenson is pretty close at this point.

    It helps to not write 'series' novels- endless rows of books all with the same cover design and a 'logo.'

    If you think the US industrial economy was based on slavery, there's no reason to believe you have any understanding of history. In the period of the struggle against slavery it was the Northern industrial states who took the side for freedom. Slavery was supported in the regressive states of the south. Slavery never contributed much to Americas industrial success.
