  1. Wanna know what's depressing? on The Internet Might Not Be So Depressing · · Score: 1

I'll tell you what's depressing---and it isn't the Internet. It's dealing with crooked companies like QWest that make using the Internet difficult. It's dealing with their unreliability, unresponsiveness, indifference to customer satisfaction and overall disappointing service that is depressing. It's most definitely not the medium that is causing this, but the people that deliver the medium. It always comes down to people---they cause depression, not electronics.

  2. Slackware Rocks! on Slackware 8.0 Released · · Score: 1

I'm still running Slackware 3.4 on my main desktop---haven't seen the need to upgrade it. Sure, I have installed new packages and libraries, but it is essentially the same system I installed years ago. Slackware Rocks!

  3. Site seems a bit slow suddenly... on Buxley's GPS Geocache Maps Offline, Now Back · · Score: 1

The site was fairly responsive when I first accessed it, but now I can't even find any caches to search for in my area. Someone should alert sites that they are about to be hit hard when posting a message in this forum. :-)

  4. Half correct. on Sean In The Middle · · Score: 1

You are only half correct. While I agree that it is the parents who help shape the child, the child is an individual, capable of thinking on his own. If we are to blame any parents at all I would start throwing stones at the parents of the bullies before the harassed.

  5. Wrong! on Sean In The Middle · · Score: 1

That's where I believe you are wronge. It's my opinion that the biggest reason why there exist such bullies is lack of discipline in the home. Parents let their children get away with too much---what makes you think they would do anything if they saw their kids acting up? Disfunctional parents lead to disfunctional children---such is the state of our country these days.

My first install of Slackware 3.4 that I did probably three years ago is the very same desktop from which I post right now. Of course I've greatly modified it, but the base install is Slackware!

It's probably not very difficult to be issued a signed certificate from any of the *known* CAs even with bad or falsified information...

Why not generate your own signing CA and then provide instructions to your customers (via a webpage) how to import the CA into their browsers. Then, certificate that you sign with it will be accepted by their browser. Yes, it might be one additional step that your customers would have to go through, but if you explain that it is providing them security then it should be worth it to them. Of course, whether or not they decide to trust you is another story. :-)

After reading through many many comments on this article I have concluded that many /. readers are really clueless. If the people of the community voted for a particular figure to be in office and certain laws were passed by that figure in office, how does that have anything to do with the Church? Many of you seem to think that it was the Church that passed those laws. You are so wrong, it was the people. Who do you think punched the holes through the voter cards? Who signed the papers? The people---American people---not the Church or any other religious institution. BTW, whoever said that religion wasn't part of the community/laws? Weren't the nations first documents based on religious beliefs?
