The wiki article on SDA is a bit slim - this is basically a phased array with many small elements, right?
Hmm... how about using TFT manufacturing to create a huge array of elements, each with a transistor and a varactor? Dunno if you can make decent varactors with standard TFT tech.
It's very obvious that people in red states are more tolerant of environmental degradation so this makes perfect sense. If it's intentional is a different question. It might just be that airport managers in other places push back more.
+1. Although I'd say a fetus is definitely alive but is doesn't make sense to call it a human being. No brain, not a human. That's why we turn off life support for people whose brain is dead. And we don't have funerals for miscarriages or spontaneous abortions. Or tissues:)
With the coming sustained contraction ("catabolic collapse" a la Greer) much of the world will go back to the dark ages, so why not start here? There should be more classes on religion, wizardry and alchemy though. Science, Shmience.
But seriously, Slashdot is great for bridging the time between concalls when you know it doesn't make sense to try and get into a problem for 10 or 15 minutes and you've looked through your email.
With the constant meetings, phone calls and emails, how do you ever get some serious code written? Many of our group work either very early or very late, and often a bit on the weekend.
He might also be very smart, telling his constituents what they want to hear to be (re-)elected and make boatloads of money. I always have to think how L. Ron Hubbard must nearly have died from laughing whenever he was alone. So did Joe Smith probably. Being a lying hypocritic asshole usually gets rewarded.
We're past peak oil as well as peak cars, peak driver's license holders and peak passenger miles (at least in the US) so I think this is a case of "Duh."
They used to be (even Intel) but newer drives from reputable vendors like Intel or Samsung plus some tier 2 like Crucial M4 are very reliable these days.
Of course you can still buy crap today but you can always do that, even on the HD front.
Agree. It sounds awfully familiar - not sure if it's from SF or "real" science. There's probably some very careful wording in there that makes it "novel" somehow.
No but you can make them reliable if needed.
In the cloud you're at the mercy of the beancounters at Amazon & co.

Where's the
n) ???
step?
I thought it's required.
Nuclear is on its way out due to cost.
You mean "free speech"=="the type of speech called free by the 'moral' majority"?
+1. :)

*Are* there any countries that guarantee free speech?
There, FTFY.
Free speech isn't absolute in the US either. Try to say "fuck" on TV or "asshole" to a cop.

If it's a complete failure maybe it'll get dumped in a year or two a la HP TouchPad and we can put Linux on it.
Made by Unicomp now. Awesome.

That one happened first on the 64GB X-25E so it's been around for a while.
You call Apple, and say "Hey, I hear you have a maps problem. Guess what? We have lots of map data and experience."
Response from Apple: "Sounds good, but we'll rather wait until you're bankrupt and pick up the patents and your map data for cheap."
No. That's exactly what flashcache does when you set skip_seq_thresh_kb and it works quite well to keep the large files out of the cache.
What's this shashdot you're speaking of?

I'm watching SSDs prices because I need one so no stinkin' RTFA for me :)
Are those list prices?
Half a dollar on sale is where it's at right now.

Don't let Cory Doctorow see this.
You betcha somebody will put CyanogenMod on it.
If the HW is good it might even be worth it.
Yes, it articulates the value of ultrabooks brilliantly: None.
