  1. Re:Public Opinion? on Google Moving PRC Records Out of China · · Score: 1

I've never understood "It's a business therefore it's ok" position. Trust me, I've tried. I like making a buck and I understand that is what businesses do; they make money. I'm not going to rehash the whole Google/China debate but Google-the-business did what businesses do and they went for the dollar. So some people like me, who feel if the Constitution was worth dying for it's worth representing (even in business, even on foreign soil), sent them a little reminder that we control their stock price. As it began to fall their carrot was moved. It's is more profitable to keep U.S. companies here in the good 'ol U.S. So it's not a matter of is Google evil or not. It's just a matter of who's got the money.

You're exactly right on so many points i'm not going to itemize them. But I will point out that most people out there won't admit it's a pride issue. Pride is why they won't sell their car and drive an older, paid for car or move into a smaller more affordible house.

A little personal story... I found a steal of a deal on a house in a prime location in a college town. My intentions were to buy the house fix it up and turn it for a profit. Then I started doing the math. Long story - short; my wife and I sold our 4000+ sq. ft. home and moved us and the four kids into the 1200 sq. ft. house.

It was the best financial decision we've made. I took the huge reduction in mortgage payment and started knocking out debt. We plan to be out of debt in a few years; including our home. The bottom line people is suck it up! Debt = pride; pure, plain and simple.

But I have to agree with some ealier posts and ask why do we have to obey thier laws? Large companies that have offices around the globe obey local laws locally. But this is the internet and some lnes need to be drawn; otherwise we could be running our selves ragged trying to keep up with all the censorship laws in each country.

I still contend, let them filter their own internet content. It is thier laws, let them enforce them.

    1. Yes China has it's own constitution. Let them filter Google. Don't force a US company to do it. If they don't like the content on the internet they have the "freedom" to block or restrict access to it.
    2. That is obviously and I apologize for not being clear. What I meant to say is no one is or should be taking a bullet to stop the sale of lead paint.
    3. What is right is right all the time. Again, if it is worth dying for then it's worth represting to the rest of the world. For instance, someone posted a comment about slavery in Sudan. I beleive it would illegal for a US citizen to own a web site or company (even on foreign soil) that promoted slavery. And I beleive that slavery and limiting free speech is a step towards slavery.
I don't think our companies should tell other countries what they should believe.
We aren't telling them what to believe; we are telling them what WE believe. And this message says "Not all people are created equal." and implies that equality only exsit on our soil.

Would a European company be evil if it sold non-lead-free electronics in the US?
How exactly is lead content equivalent to free speech? People die for free speech. People campaign and petition against lead content. There is a huge difference. If my right of free speech was revoked I'd be beyond speaking in my response. Hence we have the second amendment... the right to keep and bear arms. Remember our rights and remember the order. If these rights were important enough to die for then they are important enoough to stand behind, inspite of stockholders.

A better analogy would be comparing a man and his dog.
I'll by that, it's a much better analogy. But I'm sure many a hunter and dog owner would agree that their dogs aim to please and by that they must know the will or wishes of it's master.
At no point in creation will I have the same status as my diety.
Yup again I concure. But I'm surprised you haven't berated the extremes in that point of view as well. Because I'm sure you agree with me in that there has to be more than the two extremes of deity and humanity. Knowing and wanting what my master wants doesn't make me anymore his equal than my dog knowing I want the morning paper and fetching it for me makes him human. Knowing and understanding are two intirely different things.

Don't get me wrong. The right is just as bad with it's, "This is God's Punishment/Plan/Will." If you read your nice little Bible, tell me this: How is man supposed to know the Plan/Will of God? Isn't that elevating yourself to the same status as your deity??
Man, I lost you there. How exactly does that make one equal? If my kids understand my will (Get your room clean before I get home.) That doesn't make them equal to me. In fact I believe it's quite the opposite, they know MY will and it's not theirs. As for the rest of your post I agree; both sides are too extreme.
