  1. EA != Games on EA's E3 Lineup · · Score: 0, Flamebait

    EA = Marketing

    If EA spent 1/2 as much time on game development as they did game marketing, they might actually put something out that was not beta software disguised as the final product.

  3. Legitimate Concerns on The Future of Innovation At Stake? · · Score: 3, Informative

    Personally, I became concerned when I learned that Microsoft had rewritten the TCP/IP stack in Vista/Longhorn and added some of their own protocols.

    For those who do not understand, the TCP/IP stack in almost all OSes is based on the original BSD stack. The protocols all have specific rules. Every part of the OSI Layers serves a specific function. It works and should not be monkeyed with.

    It is scary when Microsoft decides they can do something better than the IEEE. Anyone remember WINS? How well did that work? It seems they learned their lesson. Now, instead of trying to compete with TCP/IP, they are going to rewrite their own needs into the protocols. This is very, very scary.

    Here are the boring technical details.

    Seriously, I try to wade through the manual, but sometimes it really takes a layman's explanation before I understand the point they are trying to make. MAN pages are good, but while they explain what to do, they don't always do a good job of explaining "why" to do something a certain way.

    With Google, I can usually find a more indepth explanation to help me understand what I am trying to accomplish and how to accomplish it. To me, that is learning....

  5. A Few Points on TiVo May Be a Buyout Target · · Score: 3, Informative

    I have a Tivo and I love it. It really has changed the way I watch Television. Yes, there are some short comings, but things are changing.

    The new Tivo Series 3 adds HD Recording. It will have the ability to record one show and watch "live" television on another station. Even if both stations are HD.

    It also adds the ability to hook up an External SATA hard drive to extend the storage capacity. No more cracking the case to add a hard drive. Finally, there is a RJ45 for standard networking connectivity.

    Then, Comcast has agreed to go with Tivo for their customers. As a Comcast customer and a Tivo owner, I am really excited about this.

    As for who would be interested in Tivo. I see two companies.

    Apple - Tivo is Linux based. They have a lot of *nix experience on their side. It would really be a great Triple Threat for their Video offerings on ITunes. With the strong Tivo brand and the even stronger Apple brand, this would be a huge boost for Tivo.

    Cisco - They already purchased Scientific Atlantic. They have their targets set on getting into the Consumer Market and really, really want to put a Cisco device on everyone's Television. Their motiviation is pushing Television over IP. They see it as the next big Networking push. And like Apple, they also have a ton of *nix experience on their staff.

    I would be completely shocked if it was not one of these two companies that bought Tivo.

    Tivo Is Dead! Long Live Tivo!

  6. Re:Good luck with that... on Boycott the Gold Farmers? · · Score: 1

    This is the real key to this whole conversation. It is called a Game for a reason. When it is all about Grinding to earn enough gold to get something that will make the game fun, then the game is no longer fun. Gold Farmers fill a need. If that need wasn't there then there would be no need for Gold Farmers. I am a casual WOW player. I play about 10-15 hours a month. All of my friends are so far ahead of me, we no longer play together. What choice do I have if I want to have fun with my friends? Either buy gold to help me level easier/faster during my limited play time or pay someone to level my character for me. The game is flawed, period. I do not pay $15/month to spend my limited amount of time meeting your definition of reward and effort. I am shocked that anyone would accepts that Boredom is a requirement of a MMORPG. I can not think of a single thing I would spend my hard earned money on if I was paying to be bored.

    Is Apple/Steve Jobs paying attention? More than ever, we need true competition in the OS Market. Until X86 users can install OSX on the hardware of their choice, this is not going to happen. I wish Linux Desktop was the answer, but let's face it, Apple has the experience and polish to be a true contender if they would get away from this silly hardware notion they love so much. Linux is still in it's infant years.
