Just like handwriting, voice recognition is only really usefull in stories, letters, etc. Trying to code using voice recognition would be a headache/stroke waiting to happen. Also, i dont see the keyboard ever becoming fully obsolite, because without the wasd keys and my mouse, id be lost ;-)

  11. Locked down on Can Developers Work in a 'Locked-Down' Environment? · · Score: 1

My company recently barred any changes to the system from what we (the MIS department) originally give out in the computer system. All system settings are locked, as well as access to floppy drives and cd-roms. Internal email only is enabled. Sending of documents, etc, are done through the network. Internet access has been limited, so that by default, no computers have access, and only when the employee explains why they require access to the internet do we make the decision on giving it to them. Now, obviously, these limitations are not present in the IS department's computers, however, being friends with those in other departments, i feel that restricting access this heavily is unjustified. Even the simplest thing, such as being allowed to pick and change their wallpapers at will, or picking a fun screensaver, can brighten up someone's day. Management (wo subsequently do have access to their own settings, and full internet access by default)obviously havnt thought this one through properly.

I am a Win2k nut, and a person who generally stays away from Linux. Despite this, even I find this funny:

"When the resulting software product is distributed, its creator must make the entire source code base freely available to everyone, at no additional charge. This viral aspect of the GPL poses a threat to the intellectual property of any organization making use of it. "

The phrase "This viral aspect of the GPL..." truely brings a smile to my face.

  14. My own AOHELL story on AOL's Upgrade of Death · · Score: 1

It was the beginning of december, and I was using a regular dial up account with a 56k modem. I was running MSIE 4 and wanted to upgrade to 5. It would take hours on my slow internet connection. I then realized that the AOL5 cd that came in the mail a few days earlier had MSIE 5 on it! I poped it in the drive and tried to install ONLY MSIE 5. The biggest mistake of my life. Although it didn't install the AOL lite crap, IE 5 was AOLified. The top of the screen said Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by America Online! The Icon in the corner did not have the familier windows symbol, it had the AOL symbol! I felt like I had commited a sin (and I am fairly sure that God is going to punnish me for that). Then, only weeks later, I got a DSL. My computer still had the AOL text, but I managed to remove the aol symbol in IE. The sad thing is, there is no way to uninstall it! You can uninstall the AOLified 5, and go down to a normal version of 4, but as soon as you reinstall 5 (even from microsoft's website) it defaults to the AOL crap! I need a few days to sit down and seriously search the registry for the AOL crap and try and remove it. I also might try installing IE5.5 Beta.If I find a cure, I'll let you guys know.
