  1. Re:Ubuntu on Which Linux for Professional Admins? · · Score: 1

I have to agree here. I've been using Ubuntu now on my notebook for several weeks (Averatec 3150H) and absolutely love it, of course I'm posting from my XP partition. But I'm getting close to wiping XP off the drive completely.

I've used Redhat and Gentoo extensively in the past, with only a little bit of debian experience, but w/ Ubuntu now debian looks even more appealing to me.

I've been in the design process of a hydraulic-assist exoskel for the past year or so, and safety was also a major consideration of mine. My design includes not only mechanical limits in the range of motion of the machined joints, but also a passive hydraulic bypass at the limit of each joint. This should limit the hydraulic joints ability to move past a position that its human counterpart would get pissy with.

    Any testers :)

My design incorporates the valve into the joint itself. In the event of mechanical failure in terms of range of motion, the valve fails too. Fluid everywhere, no force applied to the joint. With clever valve designs, the hydraulic system itself can be used as a buffer or counter safety for the mechanical limits. This isn't foolproof though, a major component malfunction during heavy use can still cause human harm. But this is true with many machines that we come into contact with on a daily basis. With care, a human exoskel can be very reliable. I hope.

Again, want to be first? :)

Yep. I was thinking the same thing. Sourceforge has been making alot of changes as of late and they appear to be aggressivly going after something a bit differently. I just haven't been able to put my finger on it exactly.

I also thought there were a couple points in the contest rules that looked like potential motivation for the anonymous donor. First is the way the prize money is to be split up in part 1. Obviously the more difficult sections will get more money than the easier ones (some of which are already close to completion.) This means money will be paid out, for sure. Second is the fact that half of the total prize will go to part 2, which seems like a fairly difficult feat considering the legalities and timeframe.

This makes me think that the donor probably isn't out to take a jab at BG or Microsoft, just doesn't have that kind of money. Instead, has several different needs from the community.

This leads me to a conclusion... and YOU can say you heard it herefirst!

The donor is simply a 'mod manufacturer', looking to make a quick and sweet profit on components necessary to hack the box. It might be cableing, USB adapters, BIOS sockets... I don't know. Being the first one to market on 'THE kit' that nets you a quick $10 (or more) profit can be extreemly profitable, not to mention the bragging rights and loyalty the community will show when the prizes are paid.

Seems like a good deal to someone positioned with products for the hacker community.

I hate professional football, as it is today. The game is cool in it's own right, but the players who make the big buck$ in the current industry are complete morons. I think half of them would be serving a different kind of time if it wasn't for the NFL and the massive amounts of cash that is poured in by fools that think it is real.

    Reminds me of the WWF

But lets give half tonight a ring, make them heroes, and welcome them to Canton.

Actually, a few of the billionaires from the WWF are pushing a new league which might be of interest to the /. crowd. At least it might be a bit more real. The players might play for the love of the game. If the game deserves that. We all understand passion counts. I'll guess we'll see. Check out the XFL. It might make the game a bit more realistic.

With that said... I also live in the community of the guys that were stabbed to death (allegedly) by the VIP of tonight's game.

Humm, maybe we should ban violent video games.

Hey Slushdot. I like your style, you write well. I completely stole and abused a quote from you and put it on my site.

It keeps me from having to finish what I started. I'm so f**king lazy.

I did credit you though... but then again you still may sue me.

Interesting finger hack though. Sometimes you just have to accept the obvious or less than obvious dead trout to the forehead.

    I also liked...

'Linux clearly has a long way to go to be competitive with Windows NT 4.0. With the release of the Windows 2000 operating system, Microsoft extends the technical superiority of the platform even further'

So if we want technical superiority out of Linux, we might have to forgo future 2.x kernel development and skip to Linux 3000. Win2K isn't any better than NT4 and won't be for a LONG time.

What a load. Like there is really going to be any kind of survival issues during this show. CBS will have film crews there tapeing 24/7 showing the structures and how well people work together. The 'survivors' shouldn't be too concerned for their wellfare, since they can just hop on a CBS powerboat and leave.

I also bet the people casting their 'secret' ballots will vote for the more popular people in the group as to better their own chances.

This whole thing will have to be rigged, to provide the public with the best viewing product.

Still sounds like some fun though ... :)
