  1. The Worst language to teach: Perl on Is Visual Basic a Good Beginner's Language? · · Score: 1

At lest I know which language NOT to teach anyone new to programming. Perl is horrible, but genius at the same time. You can almost invent a new language inside Perl.

  2. Java is superior on Is Visual Basic a Good Beginner's Language? · · Score: 1

Java is superior. First of all it is likely to be the language you will use at daily basis in the future (2/3 over 1/3 C# on the market), or at least something close related to it. It is easier to read than C# because you have to define thing more strict. (I think it is easier to learn C# after Java than the opposite). Java Apps is also funny for students, and you can move it around on "all" platforms. Java is more flexible. C# is easier for larger projects (needs less configuration), but not for teaching.

Yes, but this is how far you can get without refueling. Thats the whole point. To refuel commercial plains in the air is hardly a good alternative.

    >>These were all burning questions - in 1935. Charles Lindberg did exactly this sort of analysis in 1927 and the basic concepts are completely unchanged since then. The only reason this couldn't have been done in the 30's is that the engines weren't reliable enough. In computer science we don't stop developing CPUs because there exists an 386. In medicine we do not stop research on AIDS because there are some medicines out there. The distance, weight and speed variables are indeed useful, I do believe. >>No offense to anyone, but to suggest that Fawcett is discovering some new principles in aeronautics by doing this flight is absurd. This type of information has been perfectly well understood for at least half a century. It's a neat stunt, but that's all it is. There are colours between black and white. In science you seldom find the "colour" white og black in one try.

  5. I hope Opera can live on on Opera CEO on Devices, Linux, and Web 2.0 · · Score: 1

I really hope Opera survives. They are one of the very few development companies in the computer industry here in Norway (together with Troll Tech). The rest of the industry is consulting companies that support an enormous bureaucracy generated from the oil business. In Norway about 40% of the employees are working in the public sector, and we are very "red" compared to the US and UK. Personally I prefer Fire Fox as a desktop browser, but Opera has some very interesting beta versions for voice recognition, and it can also be used in commercial phone industry (I have heard there are issues with the GPL and some mobile phones?)

  6. This is imporant for Aviation on Global Flyer Part 2 · · Score: 3, Interesting

I believe this is important. To learn more about long flights is indeed useful. Also how long you can fly before the fuel weight works against you, how fast you can fly in order to get the longest distance etc. Boeing belives that in the future there will be a better market for direct planes, and less market for big planes between the big metropoles.(Airbus believes that this market is growing, so time will show who is right) Distance, speed and weight are therefore 3 very important variables for aviation, because in the future you can't make money only taking care of the number of passangers you can carry in a big jumbo. You need to fly longer and carry less passanger, that is, if Boeing is right.

  7. Not the right language for AI on Building Intelligent .NET Applications · · Score: 1

.Net is very OK for some tasks, even tough I think Java is better, or at least just as good. .Net is very probably not the right langauge for AI. For voice recognition there are some very expensive SW available, if you want it to work.

When you are applying for a job, at least in the consulting sector, they are not looking for specific languages you know at the moment, but if you are capable of learning something new when required. To have an impressive CV and a good education is paying off, not only knowing .Net or Java.

I am very sorry for this comment, but I choose to tell my opinions about this forum. I see little discussion. Most of the time there are people that only want to listen to their own boring subjective point of view. I signed up because I wanted to learn more about new technology and discuss it, but "you" are competing to be the most negative Java and C# code monkey screaming for attention. When I am reading here, I often think I choose the wrong profession. Again, I am sorry, but I think Slashdot deserves this critics.

Hi, I agree this is stupid. I can't imagine that something similar could happen here in Europe. That said, I think Apple should have put a warning on their iPod products. I recently bought Grado Labs headphones (Sr 125, Recommended!!), and they had a big warning, an A4 paper, regarding this problem. It seems that Apple think it is more important tell us not to steal music, than take care of our health. Regards FoxyFox

  12. Java, More than Sun Microsystems on Beyond Java · · Score: 1

The MacBook Pro Rev A is probably not a good buy because of these reasons: - 32 bit x86, which will be replaced in near future - Rosetta is necessary for most application, which makes the old PowerBooks better for most usage - There are battery issues, maybe others we don't know about I believe it is better to wait for a rev B, so they have better time to fix the problems and port the applications. It is one of the best tutorials I have read for a long time. The philosophy is: There are always Slashdot readers that are not updated in the J2EE world, and that like to read informative documentation on the subject.
