  1. And the law makes it a worse idea on Will ISP Web Content Filtering Continue To Grow? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Actually if anything it'll have the opposite effect on content monitoring and filtering. The SAFE act doesn't require ISPs to monitor everything on their network and get fined if they don't report somebody. Instead it says *IF* they detect somebody looking at illegal images or something else covered in the act, and they fail to report it, then they can be fined. This means that the more monitoring an ISP does of the traffic, the more likely it is that they'll technically see something that should have been reported, and fail to do so, opening themselves up for legal problems. On the other hand, if they don't monitor and filter traffic then they won't be at risk, since they'll almost never "catch" anybody that needs to be reported under the SAFE act. Granted, the SAFE act is still a horrible idea, but it's not something that will cause ISPs to do more monitoring.

I dunno, I've heard from multiple places that records have a much greater frequency response than CDs before they've been worn down. Granted the physical contact of the needle with the storage medium slowly wears this fidelity down, but with laser based record players coming out it looks like you really can get higher audio quality than a CD that won't degrade. Then again this could all just be the vinyl camp's nostalgia-driven propaganda.

I need to call BS on the comp being that slow an unresponsive. I've got vista ultimate running on a 4 year old laptop (2.4 GHz p4 mobile, 1.25 gigs of ram, ATI Radion 9000 mobility), and it only takes 2 or 3 min to boot up and once it's booted it really is pretty responsive (only interface change was to disable aero, which was auto disabled since the graphics card isn't powerful enough to render it). If you are having a problem running vista on that comp it's a configuration problem, not an OS problem. Vista may take more power than XP to run, but it's not nearly as bad as people claim it is.

The problem here is that big-name journals are offering authors the option to pay for their submission to be open-access. Why should anybody who wants their work to be available to all need to pay somebody else to ensure that it happens? I think that in the future we are more likely to see a fork of academic ideals, on one hand we'll have a vast number of wiki style scientific journals, on the other we'll have the pay-access journals.

  5. Re:My answer on Getting High-Quality Audio From a PC · · Score: 2, Insightful

The difficulty in this comes from the DRM restrictions on where digital audio can be sent. It's starting to look like the only way to get digital audio out will be via HDMI or some other encrypted digital audio interface, because of course we're going to use a digital out to make a perfect copy. Analog output is more popular with the MAFIAA because it can't create perfect copies.

It should be interesting to see if this trends upward over the next few releases.

  9. Re:I consider this part of the "cop tax" on Couple Who Catch Cop Speeding Could Face Charges · · Score: 1

If cops truly are "better drivers" that's all well and good, but why should that give them the right to say "Well I'm a better driver so I should be able to speed." By that logic Richard Petty should be able to speed even more than a cop, after all, he made his living on being able to drive a vehicle at 150mph with only inches of clearance from the vehicles around him. If "being a better driver" is a valid reason to speed then why don't they offer classes to drivers that give them a license to speed and charge them for it. I'm sure that you could make a fair amount of money off of guys with corvettes/vipers/ferarris/etc... who would pay for the right to legally use their vehicles to a greater extent, in fact I'd probably trust a driver trained in high performance driving on a regular basis in a high performance vehicle more than a cop who may be trained, but is most likely driving a crown vic with some factory performance upgrades. The reason that this would work is the fact that part of what makes speeding dangerous is the difference between those speeding and traffic around them. Cops (and other emergency vehicles) can speed on duty *if* they are using their lights because it provides a visual "get out of the way." Granted there may be situations like a call where they shouldn't use lights/siren, but unless they specifically have somewhere to get to a cop speeding makes me think "Why are they allowed to do that if they would give me a ticket for keeping up with them"

Just because it's possible to get a machine that needs a 750 Watt PSU doesn't mean that's your only choice in a desktop, even for gaming. It's all in the components you choose.

For a game to be worth it to me it has to have good replay value and/or a reasonable amount of gameplay that is actually interesting. Sure, it's easy to make a 30 hour game, but it's worthless unless the gameplay is actually interesting for the entire time.
