Also, Apple actually discouraged use of the 7.02 player in Windows for users of web-embedded Quicktime files because there was a strange problem preventing the plugin from working. But your point is still funny, though pointless :)

  2. Countless Deterants on Do Kids Still Program? · · Score: 1

I learned to do some BASIC when I was younger (I'm not that old) on a calculator because what was true then is more true now: programming is not nearly as accessible as it used to be.

In the old days you sat down, tinkered with BASIC and had a program running and you just kept playing - it was great. And calculators still offer that effect. But when it comes to making a basic application in today's world, you have 3000 steps to follow to do the most basic stuff. And that's how it should be because using complex IDE's and API's makes complicated programs possible. We shouldn't worry about programming at an early age. We should worry about spreading the message that there are jobs out there for new programmers because right now there's still the belief that your bubble will burst if you dream of becomming a programmer.

YES! I'm in college, a learning computer science major. *nix is great and I'm learning a lot about it, but I don't have the time to spend keeping up a *nix system at home or even a Windows system. I switched to Mac simply to save myself the time and frustration of being able to do the things I need to do on a computer. Remember, these things (computers) aren't just a hobby any more. They're required now in almost everything we do. They need to just f'ing work for most f'ing things. Got it? :)

I love Google (cautiously) but I wish that they would tread a little heavier. They have so many great technologies (sorry for the buzz word) that they are working on, but they move too slow to release them. I've moved to Gmail, Google Home, GDS, Blogger, Groups, and even Pages (just for kicks) but I'm still waiting to use a social network, edit documents online, make 3d models, and much more. I guess I'll just have to give in and start living my life forever beta.

  5. Re:Pointless article, oldversion.com? on The Trouble With Software Upgrades · · Score: 2, Interesting

'According to the site' is the right way to start off that sentence. The site is wrong! Just as an example, the license for Adobe Acrobat Reader specifically prohibits distribution without written consent. The reasoning is simple: Adobe would prefer that you link to their site so your users get the latest version since the typical Joe WebAdmin doesn't update his site often. This of course defeats the purpose of oldversion.com, but that doesn't mean they can ignore the license agreement.

  6. All Over Again Again on Google Slips Talk of Online Storage Service · · Score: 1

I can't believe the level of discussion. Don't we have anything better to do than to back track over the exact issues that GMail brought up? It's really not any different. Anything I write in GMail and any attachment I send or receive is all stored at Google. It's the same discussion, only now everyone's armed with all the good comments from before and it's a race to see who can reply the fastest. And I bet it'll be the same the next time Google makes something along these lines.

  8. Sony vs. Nobody on Sony Already Lost Media War to Apple? · · Score: 1

Sony is much more established than some of you seem to think. Like many great corporations, they have a diverse foundation. Their consumer products aren't their biggest thing. And even if you just look at that division, their brand of products isn't it either. Sony makes the technology that's inside other brands'/companies' products. Remember that slashdot about Sony's partial CCD recal? They didn't recall just their cameras - they recalled many other brands.

This all wreaks of a slow news day. Give us something interesting and better suited to talk about. Sony isn't going anywhere. They make a lot of bold and often stupid decisions in the consumer market, but that's because they can and their reputation is built on that sort of innovation. Look at their new low-power CMOS camera sensor. It's going to revolutionize professional digital photography. And I'm not talking about the R1. I'm talking about the technology itself. Cameras are just one example - there are many others.

  9. What keeps me sane on Surveillance Is on the Rise, Straining Carriers · · Score: 1

What keeps me sane is that every time I hear or see a topic like this, there's a lot of uproar. Maybe it's not always for or against the side I'm on. The important thing is that we don't ALL just bend over and take it. Some do, some don't. It gives me the sense that if/when things do go completely wrong, there will be some who will set it right... kinda like what happened 200 years ago.
