thanks, I have just tried that and found that if I set the Default font to DejaVu Sans, with Hinting to full and Antialiasing to none that it is quite OK. Only problem now is that Firefox and Thunderbird ignore these font settings:-(
Wonder why that is the case on Linux, but they honor the font settings under windows?
Can some one provide info on how to disable Anitaliasing fonts on Mint ( or any other Gnome UI ) Forget the invitable comments that liased font look better and provide a better user experience. For mae and many others, they just look Fuzzy and give me a headace after about 30 minutes of use
I support windows 7 for work and to turn off all antialiasing, it is one check box. If I do not do this at the first boot on Win7 / 2008 install, byt the time the install has completed I have a headache for the rest of the day.
This sort of Sh*%t has been going on far too long and is not only limited to software! Music, Video, Ipads and even to clothes and Shoes. Motorcycle parts anyone?
How come I can buy a pair of Nike runners online in the US, and have them shipped here for 1/2 the price I can buy in the store here? they are made in Asia anyway, shipping costs should be the same
Same applies to just about everything imported, Can buy online in the US cheaper than here.
What happens when your internet connection is Broken? How the heck do you play while waiting for the Telco / ISP to fix your service. I suppose we can all go back to Mimesweeper and Solitaire:-)
No now they just have to search around lookig for the Icon Somewhere!
I thought Hiroglyphics went out with the Egyptians about 2000 years ago, then MS brought them back with the bloody ribbon!
As I travel in Sydney traffic every day
after 7 am till 9:30. just about every road into an out of the city does a great approximation of a Carpark so real easy to work out ravel times
Afternoon peak starts at 4:30 and stays till about 6:30 pm
I assume the difference is that the evening traffic Spreads out into secondary roads, where the moring in just funnelled all into the city
Currently typing this on a P4 3GHz machine with 1.5Gb ram. running Ubuntu.
I regularly use a P3 Mobile laptop (Dell C400) with XP, recently upgraded it to 512Mb ram & 20Gb hdd.
Also have a PII 266 under my desk which runs my Mail / Web server. I think it has 384Mb ram but a 200Mb Hdd. runs Debian
Ken
I am typing this on a Windows 2008 Server install on my laptop, and I have disabled all the UI enhancements I can, running Windows Classic theme, and disable all cleartype/ Aliased fonts.
I am running XP and Vista in Vms. Likewise have Classic UI on both and all font aliasing disabled
Going to be trialling Win7 and my in Vm for it, I have just finished setting up with Classic UI and Aliasing turned off.
At least I can use the machines for more than 1/2 an hour and not get a headache now. All i need to do now is replce the god awful alisaed fonts and I will be happy
Anyone know how to revert start menu in 7 back to classic mode?
Any one know how to get Windows explorer back to WinXP classic mode?
Here Here At last someone that thinks like I do
First Thing I do on any machine is to set the OS them to "Windows Classic" and disable themes
Just doing this alone makes Vista usable
Windows 200 was the cleanest interface yet from MS.
I also do the Ubuntu turn of Compiz as well for the same reason you mention
Ken
I read about this last week and they already have stated that they will be supporting on SUSE 10.3, Redahat( don;t know which version), and now Ubuntu 7.1.
I take it that they will provide the packages for these distros and support Notes on all these three. Any other distro that uses these packages should also work but IBM will not support it
NT 4.0 is easy to run on any current hardware.
It works very well and very fast in a Virtual machine (Vmware) running on a Linux (pick your own flavour)box.
Same with Win2k, WinXP, etc
I currently run all of these on Vmware Server on Linux with no issues. It is a firewalled network with no inbound rules to any of these hosts so current Patches are not really needed anyway.
As long as I have Vmware then I will be able to run these indefinitley
the they will be totally useless to me as the first thing I do is turn off any antialiasing as it kills my eyes.
New Vista on a laptop at work, 2hrs and I had a killer headache and had to go and lie down. Next day same thing. then went and turned off antialiasing and have been fine ever since for up to 8 hrs a day. Upgrade:-) the machine a month later to WinXP as vista was useless and the same thing happened.
My Ubuntu box at home with 2 DVI flat panels is the same.
How about running a VMware session with windows version of your choice. Only having Outlook installed to manage your mail
No need to reboot and run windows just do mail. Leave the vmware session running minimised and open it when you need.
VMware player is free and runs well under linux and you will only still be using you existing windows licence.
Try throwing the mouse away and use it just with a keyboard!!!
Impossible I reckon to it economically.
For a touch typist it is essential that one is able to navigate around and launch apps with a few keyboard strokes. This is the reason I still use Windows Classic on my Windows installs. XP and now Vista on my work machine.
Anyone know the keyboard shortcut in Vista to open properties on an object? Used to be Alt+Enter but this now no longer works
Ken
But, but, but... what about the high cost of retraining everyone to use all these new weird applications that don't make as much sense as Windows applications!!!? What about the steep learning curve since Linux is just inherently harder to use!!!?
Obviousely you have not used Widows Vista and Office 2007 yet?
I have both installed on my brand new HPnc6400 work laptop to test for a migration next year and ANYONE familiar will have an easier time convertind to a modern Linux distro and open office then to Vista with MS Office 2007.
What a Shit piece of UI design! Very hard to do anything and find any of your familiar tools. try opening or saving a document in anything except the default locations from any application. Frustration or what.
So far I have found 2 powerpoint files tat will not open on this combo. Openoffice will at least do so.
As for the laptop being "Vista Capable"!! Crock of shit!. 5 hardware devices are found but unidentified and there are NO Drivers for Vista on HP website. One of the devices is the sound card too.
Ubuntu does a better hardware detection than Vista.
My brother in law yesterday was in the Blue Mountains, west of sydney fight the bushfires there.
Strange this was while trying to put out raging bushfires is started snowing!!! WTF!
coldest morning in Sydney today for 120 odd years!
wierd I say
KP
In Sydney here, we have been having warm spring weather since the start of this month. All the Deciduous plants here have started to bud out, and spring flowering plants are all blooming
Must be Global warming!

Never heard of this one either, but when I try it on my work PC ( Win7) i get -1.068281969439142e-19 LOL

Took me 2 days before I found out who AW was when the news broke Every computer user would know what Google is, but not everyone knows every musician!

So where is the installer for Silverlight for my Ubuntu PC I am posting this from?
This is probably a beautiful photograph that I will never see because of the technology chosen for the presentation layer.
Yep Me too If any site has the words, "Requires Silverlight" Then I just do not bother even on a machine that can run it like my work PC's
