Rather, payment for a stolen life is the rational way we ought to conduct ourselves.
Man, it sure would be interesting living in your world. Girl doesn't want to sleep with you? Rape her, and pay a $100 fine! A guy at work got promoted over you? Kill him, get a raise, and use the raise to pay the fine! And if you were rich....whee! You could go around whacking old ladies and young children just for shits and giggles! Bill Gates could have a body count in the millions!
Hey, that's a good one. Maybe I can get rid of my crappy credit rating by convincing the credit companies that the information they've stored about me violates my privacy.
That's the advantage of living in the civilized world. If you'd been to, say, Iraq at any point in the last two decades, you would have had a much different experience. The only reason people are trusting and honest here is because we've come to expect others to behave in the same fashion, and we expect the government to enforce the laws. However, all you have to do is take a stroll through the ghetto in any major city in order to realize how fine of a point our society is balanced on. As soon as enough start to doubt either the honesty and integrity of others, or the ability of the government to enforce it's laws, he behaviour of society as a whole can change quite quickly.
I can't understand why most in the science and engineering fields, not only don't believe but disregard it, with out little thought.
Because most people in those fields understand the need for solid evidence. They live in a world of hard facts, and, as such, base their beliefs on what can be proven.
As an engineer, I'm required to find solutions to problems. Some times, I'm required to look out side the square and consider things that at first might seem strange, but when understood, make perfect sense. This helps me be more creative and allows me to explore the possibilities.
Yes, but you don't say "hey, I know there's no evidence for it, but I believe that a roof with no walls will remain standing without a problem", and then proceed to build a house based on that belief. Or, at least, I hope you don't.
Why is it so hard to comprehand that something like ghosts/spirits might be real, given all that we know that we don't know. We know we don't know everything. There fore, there must be a lot of things out there in the Universe that seem completely strange and foreign.
Sure, maybe I'm the Emperor of the earth. You don't know that I'm not, so you better send me your wife and your car, just in case. Wouldn't want me sending my imperial guards after you, now would you?
Not long ago, most people thought the world was round, but it was certain people who where able to think outside the square that would be proved correct in later years.
....
I guess I must be real dumb....I STILL think that the world is round!
They don't even try any more. Initially, Randy was testing a lot of "professional" psychics, healers, mentalists, et al. One after another, they proceeded to fall apart at the seems and were exposed for the frauds that they are. However, once it became apparent that Randy really knew what he was doing, all the really famous psychics started to avoid him. These are people who clearly know that they do not poses the powers which they claim - they're simply scam-artists with an outwardly-convincing sales pitch. Nowdays, the only applicants for the $1 million are either mentally unbalanced people and individuals who have accidentally deluded themselves into believing that they have a gift. It's sad, really.
Initially I didn't intend to reply to your comment. Some things are too absurd to be taken seriously. But it's a slow day, so I'll throw you a bone.
For the record, I don't even own a TV, although I am looking at buying a nice 50" LCD to hook into my computer. If you will permit me to return your criticism in kind: you should perhaps stay away from Al Jazeera, Michael Moore, and Code Pink, and find yourself some slightly credible sources. Even Pravda would be an improvement.
As for your "revisions" foolishness, it's a matter of record that death rates in Iraq have plummeted to something approaching those of a nation at peace. Just because your buddies at KOS aren't reporting it, doesn't mean it's not happening. And no, George W. Bush did not personally brainwash the Iraqi Morgue employees, Iraqi Government, and the members of the mass media who ARE reporting on the improvement.
Lastly, I find it rather amusing to be accused of being "a sucker" by someone who thinks that not watching TV makes him an intellectual. If you want to avoid looking ignorant, stop being so pretentious.
Thanks for that correction. You're right, there have been precedents of states suing the federal government even when both sides belonged to the same party, and you're right, I wasn't aware of the legal process in question. Therefore, with your corrections in mind, I'll add a disclaimer to my earlier comment:
Although the likelihood that this action is politically motivated remains high, there is also a slight possibility that the politicians in question are simply stupid. Maybe the really do believe that they are "doing the right thing for future generations".
I'm a "states rights conservative", even if I'm not a Yank, and I say let 'em do it! If the blue states want to be stupid and regulate and tax the shit out of power companies, automobile manufacturers, and heavy industry, let them! The only ones bearing the brunt of it will be the blue states. The companies in question will either move to red states, thereby creating jobs for republicans and taking tax revenue from democrats, or will hike up their prices. Either way, the only ones who suffer are the politicians who were stupid enough to come up with the idea, and the citizens who were crazy enough to elect them. That's what "states rights" is all about!
Notice how the writer dismisses the efforts as being part of the states' "continuing opposition to President Bush's policies"? It couldn't be because they are sick of nothing being done about greenhouse emissions.
Exactly, it couldn't! That's why you'll never see democrat dominated states suing a democrat president. It simply wouldn't happen.
My guess? Now that Iraq is starting to look better, they need something new to hammer Bush with, lest he actually start to make gains in his approval ratings.
Fortunately, the real numbers don't break down that way. By far most Americans believe that greenhouse emissions caused by humans are causing global warming. Most Americans want the War in Iraq to end now and the troops brought home. Most Americans believe George Bush has done a terrible job.
Most Americans think Oswald didn't assasinate JFK. Almost half of Americans think UFO's visited the earth. And the vast majority of Americans beleive in God, Heaven, Angels, Miracles, Hell, and the Devil, and not in a figurative sense.
You know what? Most people are fucking stupid. There's a reason why "most Americans" don't get to make policy.
I can understand that the Right has beaten the Media to death, but it doesn't excuse them losing their courage completely.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Oh God...
*wipes tear*
Thanks, man, up to that point I thought you were serious:) Now I realize you're just a really gifted parodist. You rock!
1) European union using American made operating systems! Stay tuned for more! 2) Chinese web filters running on US made systems! End the oppression! 3) North Korean propaganda machines run on US made computers! Film at 11!
Bad analogy, even ignoring the "better you than me" subtext. In both cases, it is the person controlling, or attempting to control, the path of the object which bears responsibility.
So, we'll blame "God", then?:)
I don't know. If I have to kill one innocent person in order to save 100 others, I'll do it in a second. You're probably right, it would probably end up being a legal nightmare, but that doesn't change what's right.
Isn't this how BushCo has been justifying the staggering number of Iraqi civilian deaths? According to the relatively conservative (and verifiable) estimate of the Iraq Body Count, we've killed 0.3% of the population. There have been smaller genocides.
Even worse, more than 17 million Americans have died since BushCo took power (8.26 per 1000 per year for 7 years). He's clearly attempting to ethnically cleanse the entire United States. Those evil bastards must be stopped!
I think this is a stupid Idea and nature should be left to take its course
In that case, I suggest you give away your house, remove all your clothing and/or medical devices, and run off into the woods. And don't be building no improvised shelters or hunting implements either! Learn to live with the elements. Momma nature will take care of ya!
If a bullet ricochets off of my armoured car, and hits an innocent bystander, will you blame my car?
Sure, there would probably be lawsuits over storm steering just like there have been lawsuits over every other endeavour that humans have undertaken. Big deal.
I'm actually not a huge Radiohead fan, although I did like some of their earlier stuff. Therefore, I very much doubt I would have bothered to pirate their Album at any point in time. However, after reading here about their novel approach to marketing and sales, I DID go and pay to download their album, and am listening to it right now. If those on here who are constantly complaining about RIAA and the music industry in general were really serious about wanting to switch to a better model, they'd be doing the same. We can all afford $5! Even if you only pay $2, it's still more, even after bandwidth and hosting charges, than they would get from a "label" contract. All true nerds and music buffs should be downloading their album RIGHT NOW, whether you're a fan of their music or not! Let's support the open-music model, if nothing else.
A bad cop would, absolutely. And I'd expect him to be held responsible for it, regardless of the type of force used.

The problem is that the taser has lowered the standard of when to use force.
No, it's only changes the type of force used. Previous to the taser, we would have used pressure points, choke holds, fists, and batons - all of which can be just as dangerous as a taser, if not more so.
US troops located a few small caches of old shells loaded with chemical agents. Therefore, Iraq had chemical weapons at the time of the invasion. The quantity may have been insignificant, but technically speaking, Bush was right.
This is exactly the same thing as your defence of Greenpeace. Sure, they're right about most things, but they blow everything so out of proportion that most people just ignore them. They've lost all credibility.
Right. Better toss a burqa on those girls. Wouldn't want some sicko being attracted to sexually mature females!
Hey, that's a good one. Maybe I can get rid of my crappy credit rating by convincing the credit companies that the information they've stored about me violates my privacy.
Thanks! You're a genius!
Boobies!

Oh yeah? Well I pad 200 million trillion dollars for a slide-rule and a stack of punch-cards! Beat that!

You mean like when we invented electricity, split the atom, and rode a rocket to the moon?
Or when we learned how to make fire, for that matter? I somehow doubt that the first caveman to start a blaze had any idea wtf he was doing.

When that ruling was first made, it was somewhat common to see topless women for a while. Then, like all fads, it faded away.
