I think a lot of the reasons that people are so against things such as this are mainly psychological, which as far as I can tell means they are irrational. What is the first thing that a goverment/group/person usually does when they are preparing to get involved in a conflict. They try to get their hands on as much information about the other party as possible. While I am by no means saying that I think our governments are preparing to declare war on us, it does seem to imply that our government does not trust us, which may strike a nerve for some people. My personal reason, which is also mainly psychological, is a desire for privacy. The vast majority of our society are generally law abiding people, who at worst drive too fast or cross roads when there isn't a cross walk. However, people do have an inherent craving for privacy, we feel safer when have that privacy. The average person who does not commit any crimes, may for instance not want anyone to know about their secret highschool crush, their first kiss, etc. and things such as RFID tags and compulsory ID threaten to take our society to a place of constant monitering where nothing is secret, none of our special memories, thoughts, etc. are sacred. just my thoughts.

As I see it, the problem is that people are not striving for perfection in themselves. We fear that everyone else is trying to cheat and swindle us for all we have, and then seek to protect our material belongins, rather than striving for strength of character and happiness. Happiness does not come from owning your car and house, or even your Porsche and mansion. Instead happiness comes from loving, and in order to love you must be able to trust. Now, I know that no one is perfect, and that there are people out there who will cheat, lie, and steal. This is where the government comes in, government in general is meant to protect you from the ill will of others. But when the people who have come to the mistaken thought that money and power equal happiness are put into a position of government, the system becomes corrupt. The people who wrote the constitution knew this, and the preamble itself suggests that they knew it was flawed, even if they could not forsee the ways in which it would be misused. This is why they said "in order to form a more perfect union" rather than to assume it was perfect and set it in stone. This is also why they included provisions for ammending the constitution, so that when flaws were found, they could be corrected. These ammendments are sacred, meant to protect the rights of the people, rather than restrict them, by dictating who can marry who, based on sexual preference. Alas, I digress. In short, strive for happiness rather than wealth, and remember that the government exists to serve and protect its people, not restrict them, and when a government becomes corrupt, it is time to begin reworking it.

According to the Whie House Press Briefing on June 16, 2005. Having a set timetable of goals (seems to me like they're implying an exit plan) would show weakness to the terrorists and the insurgency (http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/06/2 0050616-5.html). Personally, I feel this is a load of bull. Seems to me like we're going into another Vietnam, with no plans for leaving, fighting an unconventional enemy which continues to grow and is aided by a large number of the citizens of the country, helping a government which seems to be doing very little to help itself. And now we're being told that our military is being stretched too thin...anyone feel a draft?
