What is the general opinion of the/. community on who is the least evi
not that i soley constitue a general opinion, but here is what gives. Bush is the *most* evil candiate. Gore isn't a whole lot better, but fear bush. If you are concerned with civil liberties, then republicans, as a general rule, are not your friends.
my recommendation. If you live in a state that is a toss up, or even close, vote for gore, not nader (as much as it pains me to say that.) If you are in a state that is a clear bush victory, then vote for nader (getting 5+ percent of the popular vote will help establish the green party as a major player - federal matching funds, automatic inclusion on ballots in certain states, etc... having a strong "watchdog" party will be good for democracy overall"
to people who aren't inteding to vote: please, go vote for Ralph Nader -- it's like voting none of the above... Who knows, Jesse Ventura won Minnesota by being what Micheal Moore calls the "fuck you vote".
4 years of Bush will probably bring us back to recession and an even greater sepeation of weath, but we can boot him in 2004. the real problem is the *4* justices he will appoint to the supreme court
adding to the number of people who will vote on things like "how much will it increase my wellfare/social security/income" and "what government programs will it create to help my particular selfish need".
or "how much of an unneeded taxcut will i get so i can fufil my own particular selfish need"
you're working harder than the single mom who is working 2 full time jobs any can't afford health insurance for her kids?
we don't reward hard work in this country. we reward luck. luck either of being in the right place at the right time, or just being born into opportunity (affording to go to college, affording a professional baseball team, whatever). what we *punish* is poorness.
um yeah... if people start bringing dates over to their houses to watch a low quality recording on a 17" monitor, the movie industry is is *serious* trouble
we should all have to learn a new language the way we learned graffitti to get the palm to know what we were saying (beat up martin != eat up martha).
American English is only recognized at about 95% (realworld) accuracy, even after being trained to a specific speaker. This is even after developing pretty mature hidden markov models, and having pretty powerful cpus. Other languages are very far behind, as it would take a lot to build new HMMs to deal with the many different phonems that other langauges have (mandrin chinese is especially dificult)
I didn't see anyone else posting this, so I thought i'd share:
I have DSL through USWest is now Qwest, and to the best of my knowledge, it is pretty secure from the get go.
My DSL 'modem' (would calling it a router be too hard for people?) is a cisco 675. It gets an IP via DHCP from qwest. Howerver, it's internal IP is 10.0.0.1 and all of the other computers on the inside get assigned a 10.0.0.X address via DHCP (from the router). When I want to get to a computer on the inside, i have to open up a port on the router. For example, 23 and 80 go though to my linux box. Is this as safe as I think it is?

i too, was a skeptic at first. But really, it's just like sim city in the regard that it has no real point except the objective of getting better and more stuff (like building more junk to get a bigger pop in simcity). What makes the Sims more fun than simcity is the human element. I've never been the mayor of a metropolis, but i have been a guy trying to get the girl next door to have sex with me.
so anyway, you combine the fun creative elements of simcity (which now that i think of it is prolly why that game is fun.... just like playing in the dirt with a toy bulldozer), and add some human emotion.
I know a lot of people who think the game is stupid... but none of them are people who have actually played it.

Video games, says Poole, will never be as good as films at telling stories visually, or as good as
books at weaving "cerebral tapestries" of ideas and human lives. "But video games are already
extremely good at providing an exhilarating blast of the animal emotions. Fear and triumph --
that is why you play a videogame at the moment." Modern videogames are fun, a means of leisure
and relaxation.
Actually, I would have to disagree with is on many points. I think a lot of story based games like RPGS do a good job of telling the story in such a way that one gets to be *in* the story
And what about EverCrack^H^H^H^H^HQuest? I actually know a guy who flunked out of school because he was playing it too much. I've seen quite a few people for which it became the new 'real life'
And man oh man, when the massively multiplayer Sims is released, I don't expect to see daylight for quite a while;)
Another example of the convergence is in those sports games - golfing alongside Tiger Woods on your PC as he played on TV... pretty nice. How long before that sort of gameplay comes to Monday Night Football?
And as AI progresses, we could begin to see games that develop a plot by themselves based on a player's actions, ala a virutal soap opera. Given enough understanding of a world, and some basic motivators (greed, lust, et all) such a game would even be possible with today's technology.
So anyway, it's not just animal emotions. I think games can invoke a wide array of real human emotion as well.
This is what i keep telling my friends here in North Dakota. It prolly applies to other small (population) states as well.
Not only am I voting for Nader this November becuase I feel that he's the best man for the job, to vote for Gore or Bush would be effectively throwing my vote away.
Sounds strange, doesn't it? Most people would argue that voting for a third party canidate would be throwing a vote away
In the key battleground states, yes. For the love of everything that is good, if you are in the one of those states, please vote for Gore to keep Bush out of office (or vice versa, if you're one of those people - but most Nader supporters are prolly more likely to lean democrat). However, in a small state it is quite the opposite.
For example North Dakota (where I am now, sadly) always goes Republican. Always. And given how close it is now, I have no doubt that it will again. Furthermore, ND only has 3 electoral votes. So, if I vote for Gore (or Bush), my vote doesn't matter because my state's paltry 3 votes (which won't matter anyway) are pretty much guaranteed to go to Bush.
However, my vote for Nader does matter. It's very doubtfull he'll carry even one state (but who knows... Ventrura *is* the gov of Minnesota), but my vote will help him gain a higher percentage of the popular vote. That means FEC matching funds next time around, greater awareness of his cause. More visibility in being the political watchdog. More pressure on the Democatic party to go back to being democrats instead of Republicrats. All sorts of goodies.
So... think your vote can't make a difference? It can. Don't throw it away, Vote Nader!
The second amendemnt says what it says. No whining or double talk will change that. The Constitution
does not require "interpretation". It is very straight forward
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear
arms, shall not be infringed.
Last time i checked, we had a well regulated militia... it's called the national guard.
Oh, and if the 2nd Amendment *does* mean that the gov can't stop people from having weapons, would that mean i personally can have chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons?
The fact of the matter is that the constution clearly says that the supreme court handles matters of constituationality, not the congress. There's a reason we have seperation of powers. So when the supreme court says a gun control law violates the second amendment, that's when it does.
Personally, I prefer to decide for MYSELF how MY money is best spent. A tax cut would let me do that.
by that logic, why have taxes at all? why just not let people decide where ALL of their money goes? i think that question answers itself
Moreover, say everybody gets this tax cut:
The wealthy : "another trip to the south pacific and a new yacht to go with it!"
The middleclass : "alright, a new big screen tv"
The poor: "well, guess I'm eating cold beans again becuase i didn't make enough money to pay taxes in the first place"
The whole reason that taxes are colleted at all just because people don't know how to (or moreso, are to selfish to) better spend their money.
high interest rates help people who have money and hurt those who don't.
Interest rates need to be kept low because working class America borrows money to pay for homes, cars, etc. Those who are very weathly, on the otherhand, would benefit from the high rates. And although the stock market suffers when the rates go up, it does stop inflation. And inflation is Bad for people with a lot of money, but Great for people with a lot of debt.
Sadly, its the rich who make our economic policies.
Whereas I won't be typing on a Mac because Apple chose to employ them. I was lining up a Mac laptop for my next work PC, but I don't think I'll bother...
so it'll be an puter running an *intel* chip with a *microsoft* os?
first he steved the netwon, then he made us use hockey puck mice, and now this. It seems to be the case within apple that whatever Steve Jobs wants, Steve Jobs gets. It appears since his return to apple he has become the sole dictator, is is ruling with an iron fist, and crushing his enemies. That bastard
On the other hand, Apple is no longer about to go under, they are competing to be one of the largest hardware companies in the world (up there will Dell, even), they make good machines that get rid of the model to model proprietary differences of the past, families can get hooked up to the internet with a comptuer that is easy to use and doesn't have shit hardware (like those compaqs they sell at wallmart) for around 800 bucks.... so maybe the lesson to be learned (and was learned by Jobs) is that you have to be an arrogant jerk who puts pressure on competetors and partners ala Bill Gates in order to dominate the market.
Although I don't like all of his tactics, I wouldn't be typing this on a Mac if Jobs hadn't been using them.
i finally found a decent mpeg video player, mtv - but its nagware, not gpl'd.... and if i try and change the window size the framerate drops to crap. real works pretty well for... real streams. and that's about it (maybe mp3, i donn't know cuz), i use xmms for mp3 and like it better than winamp.
i can live without windows media, but i need my quicktime. i have yet to find something that will play sorensen compressed video (unless there is a new xanim nobody told me about). If apple would get off their ass and make quicktime for linux, i'd like them even more than i do now.
the only reason we can get film to look as good as it does (especailly color) are a bunch of developing tricks. So.... take your image and put it in photoshop (or the GIMP, if you prefer;) ) and do some digital developing tricks.
i live in grand forks, ND, only a few hours from the canadian border, and our cable company carries CBC, so i'll be watching the canadion version (usually more interesting anyway - the stanley cup playoffs were way better on CBC than ESPN/ABC)... but if i remember correctly, in Canada rebroadcasting is legal so long as it is in its entirety, no?
do you have brand names and whatnot? i think the supermarkets here only carry the cheap raman. something around the area of 22 cents a block. i have found the brand that i like the best tho (manchou or something like that)
I'd have to answer your question with a question: how much are you willing to sacrifice to uphold your morals in this situation? Just let it go until you are facing a dilemma (lawsuit). I wouldn't do anything until their lawyers try to make you. Then, if it is important enough to you, get your own lawyer and see if you can get away with not signing off on the patent. If you are willing to invest enough time and money in it, you can at least fufill whatever moral obligation you felt because you tried your hardest to do what was right, even if in the end you are legally forced to do something. Is it worth paying civil damages? Going to jail? Slashdotters can tell you their opinions on how to get out of it, but ultimetly this is a question of personal ethics, and something that you must decide on your own.
