I also use the idea of exchanging services and use it whenever possible. I have had some amazing body work done to my cars just for fixing some simple issues on a few computers.
There are PLENTY of places in the rural United States that would love better connectivity. But I guess those places are tied too tightly to the ISPs. They are doing it for a better quality of life while here in the States we worry too much about making our money back in a timely manner, ("What?! You mean it'll be 5 years until that infrastructure is paid for?!") so a lot of people really do miss out.
I mean hey...if they want to see our "private" facebook page, they might as well pay a private investigator to follow us around and see what we are up to in case we forget to post something to facebook. I'm sure there were a few "shady" things I've done that an employer would love to know but outside of the 8-4 they don't have much of a right to know what I'm up to. Maybe I'm wrong but I guess there should be an certain expectation of privacy.
Then again, if they really want to see my facebook profile they will see how boring my life is and how I only post pictures of my dog.
In 100 years or so if the ocean levels keep rising you might get your wish!
What is this "tax" thing you speak of?! No cash exchanged so 6% (my state tax) of nothing is still nothing!

How is this "News for Nerds?" I know I'll get modded down but simply posting articles from some random dude on the Internet really isn't news...
