    If you're looking to automate backups of your gmail account on a Linux box, I use mbsync as a cron job to mirror my e-mails it locally.

    What DSLRs are you looking at?

    I've mostly had Nikon experience from low to enthusiast end, and the MF details are always stated in the manual.

    Also, you might want to look into spot focus for get more accurate AF shots.

    I used to work at IBM and there was a running joke that you had to always use Google to find anything off ibm.com because the search engine was so bad you had to manually use boolean AND's and OR's.

    There is also apt-cacher-server to cache packages locally so intranet machines can hit up a local repository for packages. I use it at home since I'm running 6+ Ubuntu machines at home between my roommate and I.

    My kindle arrived this past week and I'm posting from it at the moment.

    The collection system lets me tag files and group by collections si.ilar to Gmail.

    As for 3 gigs, the kindle can now play mp3s and is a surprisingly good manga reader as it supports a variety of image types. Not to mention native pdf support, I actually don't think it has enough space for me.

    However I have to agree with you about the pdf support as I find myself fidgeting with the view a lot to read research papers.

    While I have bought a few books, the poor implementation of New York Times (not the whole paper, expensive) and Slashdot (just headline blurbs, no comments for $2/mo).

    nm the end I hate carrying books around with me, especially when traveling.

    It's always defaulted to no in Ubuntu (at least since 2006 when I started using it).

    You have to enable it on the last screen during installation (by going to advanced), or after installation by going to System > Administration > Software Sources > Statistics.

    I can't reproduce your results. I have a rooted Sprint Hero and after enabling USB tethering and connecting it to my Linux laptop I get an authorization error. This was the same result with stock rom.

    I have to use Proxoid with Linux, or the wireless hotspot app.

    While repealing the bill would be a top priority for Republicans, it will be difficult for them to do so.

    Provided that they have a Republican House and Senate, a repeal would still get vetoed by Obama unless Congress reached 66% to override the veto. Given the unlikeliness of such a large Republican majority in Congress, they would need a Republican Congress and president to repeal this bill.

    Another note is that Republicans have decried healthcare reform as destroying America. When constituents realize in a few years that Amerca has not gone to hell and things might have actually turned out for the better, all the demonizing by the Republicans may actually work as a backlash by the 2012 elections.

    Photoshop is more for graphic designers rather than photographers. If you work in RAW look into Adobe Lightroom.

    It's the primary reason preventing me from switching to Linux 100% of the time (other reason is games).

    It's fun breaking down the ad stats on Hulu. I'm not sure why the two numbers don't add up to 1.00, but males like it 0.75/0.34. Females like it 0.91/0.28.

    The highest rating is the 25-29 age group and decreases until the 65+ where it jumps up particularly high.

    Isn't that what iGoogle is for? You get to customize it with themes and all the widgets you want, as well as get a search engine.

    An old friend of mine went through the same process.

    She's Japanese American, and throughout her life she was always slightly overweight and extremely self-conscious about her image and what she was eating.

    After moving to Tokyo, she dropped to a healthy weight and looks fabulous.

    I'm from Texas and visit Japan annually. The portion (and people) sizes always astound me when I return. A lot has to be said for eating healthier and in smaller portions, but it's difficult when portion sizes are out of control here.

    Likewise, a 7-11 "Big Gulp" is approximately 20oz in Asia. Here it's a ridiculous 44oz or even 64oz, I've even seen 72oz jugs at some gas stations.

    custom battery arrangement to maximize useful lifetime but leave a smaller dimensional footprint. - Laptop manufacturers always make the enclosure, it's just the cells that are outsourced. There's nothing inherently more customized about Apple's battery arrangement than Dell's, although Dell is more likely to use a conservative design.

    My company provides laptop battery packs for both companies and the battery pack designs are outsourced to us as well.

    In order to rapidly recharge those batteries, they'll need 350 kilowatts. "That's enough power to blow the fuses on 20 residential homes at once ... so we'll be hooking up directly to MIT's power plant to get that kind of power," Gogoana said.

    The primary reasons they can get it recharged quickly is using a new battery material (lithium iron-phosphate) and access to MIT's power plant. I know nothing about current grid limits, but I'd imagine we would need infrastructure changes just for a recharging station that supports 10+ vehicles every few miles. Otherwise this is your typical charge overnight on a 220V outlet electric car.

    I'm an agnostic.

    My response would be the same as an atheist's up to a point. Even though I can deduce there probably not being a basilisk in the box, that does not imply that basilisks do not exist or perhaps fit a different description then what we imagine.

    I reject pretty all religions' image of God, but that's not to say he/she/it may or may not exist in some form or another.

    My professor went through many solutions (including our CS department's own subversion repositories) and eventually just settled on Google Code. It's easy enough to set up and use with a 30 minute primer on subversion (how to import, check out, commit, resolve conflicts).

    The biggest drawback / concern was that you cannot make code hosted on Google Code private. However in our case we were working with 6-7 person groups on a major project so stealing code was not an issue since each team's implementation was radically different from each others.

    By your link, the minimum requirements is a 70-200/2.8 IS. I don't see anywhere they state 1200mm requirement. By the way, Sports Illustrated only has one of these bad boys.

    If a sport photographer needs to cover more area, they will typically use a second camera + PocketWizard setup on the other side of the venue rather than lug around a $120k lens.

    You can also get some more reach using a 1.4x or 1.7x teleconverter at the expense of speed and image quality.

    That's because all 3 laptops you linked to used Sony cells which were the root cause of the problem (dated 2006 - 2007). In this case, the engineering issue is still localized to a single manufacturer.

    What DSLR are you using that is "professional-grade"?

    Even current market entry-level DSLRs such as the D60 / XSi have a big enough buffer to shoot JPG at 3 fps in continuous mode infinitely (until you run out of storage space). I'm fairly certain most older model DSLRs have a big enough buffer as well.
