i didnt find many examples of people enthusing when i read the comments. pretty much everybody is whinging about something. looks more like a lot of people managed to resist clicking on the link and saying something positive. hence my perfectly valid question.
most the people i know are or have been depressed, and a lot of them have been on meds. i think well adjusted people tend to have well adjusted freinds so maybe they aren't as aware of how rampant mental health issues are in the general populace.
personally, i gravitate towards people that are genuinely mental.
i'm serious, not trolling. is anyone on here any more than utterly ambivalent to the fact that there is yet another slight incremental advancement in the power of video cards?
i am interested to hear from anyone who is genuinely excited by this news. I'm also interested in hearing from someone who would pay £400 to increase their rendering power by 15%.
(yes i know that only applies to people who already have the current fastest video card, but i'd love to know if anyone is actually rich and bored enough to replace bleeding edge with bleeding edge at every opportunity)
i'd rather be incapable of writing than be depressed. and as for not knowing what happiness is without experiencing depression that is a load of horseshit - i knew the difference between happiness and anxiety before i ever got depressed and now all that shit is out of my system and i'm happy again, i can honestly say my earlier understanding of happiness was perfectly accurate.
it was fun enough, and i played it through the the (abrupt and anticlimactic) ending, but i really didnt get what the MASS of hype was about. although i never played it online and only played multiplayer once coop with one other person, so maybe thats what it missed.
actually a girl called me that and it was the last thing i heard before having to come up with a slashdot handle, but now you mention it, it is rather effeminate and also quite ironic that someone with such a name would question your assessment of SG-Atlantis.:)
is that a troll? i dont watch sg-1 but i watch altantis regularly and it doesnt seem very girly to me. i also never watched dr quim medicine woman either so i might be missing your point.
that sounds like that episode of star trek where they discovered a message hidden in the DNA of all humanoid species, that explained why all the aliens in star trek look like humans with little bits of rubber glued to their faces.
i was under the impression that h264 was a standard, and h323 was codec implementing that standard, or somethign to that effect. (so there can be many different h264 codecs)
my mate russell did the graphics on the carmageddon games - i bought his delorean off him last year, and it was actually used for the delorean model in the game.
I used to work for a bakery years ago, where i would use a Commodore 286-16 to process orders in a DOS app. This was in 1995, so the 286 was getting on a bit, and after a while it would give BIOS errors and not boot. We noticed this happened when the weather got hot, so we took to putting it in the cold room for 30 minutes before turning it on, and that seemed to cure the problem.
My other favourite is PSU fan bearings. I usually stab a pencil in through the air vent and that jogs the bearings enough to shut up the grinding noises when they're getting old.
The worst voodoo is getting windows "network neighbourhood" to work with its random ability to see computers whenever it feels like it. I've never fully understood how to troubleshoot it, and luckily now i'm on linux, it isnt an issue.
what astounds me is that the RIAA/MPAA have only just identified "schoolyard sharing" as a threat. i'm pretty certain it's been happening since the late 1970's when cassette tapes were cheap. come to think of it, it has been absolutely RIFE for 30 years. Good job they caught it in time, otherwise this disgusting flagrant theft might have bankrupted the entire music industry. Remember kids, "Home Taping Is Killing Music".
i've only ever used automatix, because it seemed more comprehensive to me, but this means of course i have no idea how effective easyubuntu actually is.
i think half the things automatix does are adding more repositories to the package manager, using the package manager to install them, then finishing off some fiddly config to make things work out of the box.
the other half are things that arent in a repository so they need to be downloaded, extracted, compiled, installed and configured.
You could try installing things manually as and when you need them (probably sensible), i'm sure the ubuntuforums will provide more than enough info.
i think these tools are just so that noobs have one less hurdle to jump.
provided there isn't a hardware problem and you realise to use Automatix or EasyUbuntu to install non free stuff like mp3/dvd support i think your opinion will be changed by ubuntu.
i suggest you read this article: (and apologies for mispelling Colombia, but that's hardly grounds to dismiss my point) The Colombia Plan: April 2000
here is a relevant quote:
"There are other factors that operate to increase coca production. Colombia was once a major wheat producer. That was undermined in the 1950s by Food for Peace aid, a program that provided taxpayer subsidies to U.S. agribusiness and counterpart funds for U.S. client states, which they commonly used for military spending and counterinsurgency. A year before President Bush announced the "drug war" with great fanfare (once again), the international coffee agreement was suspended under U.S. pressure, on grounds of "fair trade violations." The result was a fall of prices of more than 40 percent within two months for Colombia's leading legal export."
so you see, as i said, wheat was the major export up until the 1950s, when U.S subsidised wheat exports made it unviable for Colombian peasant farmers to produce wheat. Now George Bush is doing exactly the same thing to Coffee.
And I totally agree, that the drug money is used to opress the people of Colombia with landmines, guns etc. The U.S. even sends in more weapons like bioweapons and attack helicopters to help the corrupt government, police force and paramilitaries further surpress the local population and maintain the corrupt drugs based economy.
Apparently prevention (addressing socialogical causes) and treatment of drug addiction and abuse is 10-20 times more successful than criminalisation of the people involved. But it's more profitable for the U.S. government to throw "superfluous population" in jail, and maintain a thriving drugs industry in Colombia, whilst opressing the "superfluous population" there, rather than to give Colombia legitimate aid to rebuild an economy based on food crops. It is deliberate.
and the crucial point is that you can LEGALLY install DVD, MP3 support etc, with a single click.
i know it's easy to install this stuff on ubuntu with automatix, but in america it isnt legal. with the click n run thing it is, becuase you pay for a license to do so.
is that like queef richards?
the latest kernel has broadcom drivers
yeah totally. i would be more excited about a story that said Geforce 7's now only $75!

i think the latest version of the linux kernel includes broadcom wireless drivers.

is it possible to get an iSight to work on linux, and is there a H264 video conferencing app for it too? i have a crap webcam and aMSN is awful.

i'm betting you use greasemonkey to automatically insert your extra sig into the comment field whenever you submit a comment on slashdot.
you could tell anyone requiring support to put [SOME KEYWORDS] in the subject line and whitelist anyone with that subject.
yes
