...it always seems like a good idea to sleep with a girl, but somehow it doesn't seem like such a good idea when I wake up in the morning next to her...
Commence with the "c'mon, he's lying, this is/. and noone gets laid" jokes:
There seems to be an assumption that we have been looking for oil with the same intensity, but if there is ample currnet supply, where is the incentive for oil companies to look for more oil? If a company can make more money by doing less work (and making the supply smaller while the deman keeps growing), where is the incentive to find new supplies
This is modded as funny, but I personally know of two accounts where guys have been in car crashes while watching "movies" on their in-dash video...
HUDs are one possible use, as is projecting things outside the car; for example, nav directions on the road in front of you. BMW has done some experiemtns of that sort with steerable LED headlights.
Which makes me wonder how this would compare to an LED based projector, or if this type of technology could be used in larger projectors for home use. Even withthe cost of bulbs included, projectors offer far more value over most other TV systems, with the biggest drawback being the ambient light requirements. A laser might have the potential to remove that drawback and really push projectors more mainstream.
I see 2 general debates here.
-Are these games realistic enough to provide any real benefit?
-Does this provide proof that violent videos make people violent?
Gran Turismo can be a great tool to help someone learn a driving technique, a track, etc, and some pro racers do indeed use games as a tool (and I have too, before going to a track). But that is all it is, not a replacement for real driving. Same as this; it doesn't have to fill every niche that other training will, but it can be a great additional to training already. When I rode Laguna Seca on my bike, it sure was nice to know where every corner was,a nd I felt like I knew what I was doing from the first lap.
Now, does GT make me a reckless driver in the process? Well, if I wasn't the kind of guy that doesn't always do the speed limit, I probably wouldn't be playing a racing game. But, I don't turn off the playstation after a game and do hit 160 in my car. So, you wouldn't blame MS flight sim for causing 9/11, why blame FPSs for school violence?
I think the bigger reason is that if the small company loses, Microsoft is next in line to get sued. Think of it this way, if you sue MS for using your IP, you'll most likely lose. BUT if you sue a small company, you might win. Now, if MS uses software from that small company, now you can sue them with a much better chance of winning, since you have already set precident
