Well it isn't a precedent just yet. The court hasn't ruled, it's just this assistant US Attorney Schroeder guy who says it's ok.

Only Russian laws apply to Russians. American laws only apply to Americans...The reason that the FBI could nab them is that they came to the US.

Why? They were still Russians, and according to your premise, only Russian laws apply to Russians. Or maybe you meant to say something like "Only Russian laws apply to people in Russia. American laws only apply to people in America" But of course, that's not true either. For example, American citizens are liable for income tax even when living abroad. So what was your point?

Because we are unable to do this today does not mean it is impossible

True, the simple fact that we can't do it doesn't mean it can't be done. However, other facts do mean it can't be done.

If all files of say, 1MB, could be compressed to a smaller file, then some of those compressed files would necessarily be identical. If they are identical they can't be decompressed to different files. Therefore, not all files can be compressed. Not today, not tomorrow, not ever. It has nothing to do with not knowing how to do it. It simply can not be done.

But then they're not prime, either.

They weren't "compressed files". That's the only problem. They were just literal fragments of the original file.

Fragments smaller than the original. In other words, compressed. As soon as this guy started asking for that rule change it should have caused the challenger to become wary of a trick. He didn't, and his arrogant challenge was met.

He thought he was dealing with a kook, and having come to that conclusion, stopped thinking. He was drooling over the prospect of having found a fool for his personal entertainment. No doubt he was looking forward to sharing the tales of his fool's efforts with the rest of those "in the know," and all having a good laugh at this ignorant kook trying to square the circle. Instead, he was the fool.
