  1. Slashdot Independence on Happy Independence Day, Jose · · Score: 1

It's amazing. The same country that produced Frederic Bastiat also produces jose bove.
Now I see jon katz glorifying this person who doesn't understand personal liberty. Which indicates jon doesn't either. If jose bove is a hero, jon katz is a talented writer.
I've had jon filtered out. Strange thing is that user preferences never seem to work - slashdot keeps forgetting I'm logged in.
I hate repeat what others have been saying, since I used to disbelieve them. Slashdot is sloppy reporting-full of faulty logic, repeat stories, lack of fact checking, and bias from the people who post the stories.
Compound that with the growing attitude of the Kids Without Real World Experience who think that metallica are a**holes because they expect to get paid for their music, while they are in the right because they are stealing someone else's property, and you have a site with a complete lack of common sense. Not even roblimo can save you now.
So it's fitting that today, July 4th, I delare my independence from slashdot. When I want breaking tech news, I'll go to another site (perhaps the register). When I want bad reporting and immature commentary, I'll come back to slashdot. But I don't expect that to be any time soon.

    It's been fun.

  2. This is all wrong! on Napster, Napster, Napster · · Score: 1

I don't really like the Offspring's music, but I love their sense of irony.

  3. Re:Quite frankly... on Gun Sales Halted By FBI Computer Glitch · · Score: 1
    >thankfully i moved to ireland. not only are guns severely restricted, but even the police are (mostly) unarmed. friends and co-workers are astonished on a regular basis about school and office shootings in the states - i patiently explain that the gun nuts who have congress's ear are just that: nuts.

Stop misleading people. Ireland has a population of around 3.5 million. That's about the size of the state of Colorado. IIRC, Ireland had a bad incident where some guy went nuts and shot up a preschool. Pretty rare there, huh? Well, for Colorado, it's pretty rare to have a columbine type incident.

What you're trying to do is compare one apple to a case load of apples. If Ireland were the size of the US (it would have to increase in size 85 times to get there) then you can start comparing the amount of crimes in Ireland to the amount of crimes in the US. Until then, keep your 'emotional logic' in check.

  4. Re:Ironic: Government ignores Constitution on Employers Logging Keystrokes-What Can You Do? · · Score: 1

    >> The government of the United States may be an employer, but it is a public employer, not a private one. Thus, I can't see any reason why it shouldn't have to obey the Constitution, especially the fourth Amendment.

They're not searching and seizing anything they don't own. It's their computer, their network, and you're there on your dime. If it was your computer, your network, your time, and they're tapping into it, that's where the 4th ammendment comes into play.

    >> And why shouldn't a private employer be held to the Constitution also? They are located in America; shouldn't they have to play by the same rules as everybody else? Something is really wrong here.

Yes, your grasp of the constitution is wrong here. The bill of rights is specifically set up to limit the rights of the _government_, not individuals or businesses. Limits to the rights of businesses and individuals are made by laws, not by the bill of rights.
If you don't like an employer's policy that IS legal, you have the right to leave. You can find another employer, or go into work for yourself. You can start a company, hire employees, and then decide if you want to give them free reign to do whatever they want from the computers and networks you own, on your dime. (Hmm. Angry employee launches a DOS or crack attempt from your network and you didn't do anything about it or even have a system in place to catch it? What how fast your butt gets sued and you're out of business. Disgruntled employee sends trade secrets to your rivals? Your rivals flourish, your business goes under.) Boy, it's completely unethical for these businesses to want to know what you are doing while you're being paid to work for them on their computers and their networks!

  5. no conan on The Simpsons The Movie? · · Score: 0

Ugh. Please don't involve conan if this happens. If you look at the shows that conan produced, they're the worst simpsons episodes. The original simpson producers that left to work on 'the critic' were the best. Watching a conan-era simpsons is like watching fox's 'The Family Guy'.
(Here's a great idea: Have a character mention a "funny" situation during the program, then show that funny situation actually taking place, then go back to the main plot. Repeat 50 times in a half hour show. That's the family guy!) As crusty would say, Oy!

  6. Re:do you have a tivo? comments please! on Tivo Source Code Released · · Score: 1

I saw that the subscription is not absolutely necessary - if you don't have one, you just program Tivo like you would a vcr, no bells and whistles though. I'm just waiting for the next generation, when, according to their web page, you may be able to add more storage on your own, which would be cool. Maybe a 10/100 ethernet jack so I can drag and drop old shows using SMB to one of my computers on my home network. That would be sweet. Oh, through in a basic web browser that can be used with any ISP, and I'm there for sure!

  7. applixanyware.com on StarOffice Significantly Delayed · · Score: 2

It's a pity that they haven't really announced it, but applix's web based office suite is up and running at applixanyware.com.

Maybe it's still in beta, but it worked for me when I had to convert a word file to html a while back. I'd use it more, but I'm stuck at 26.4.

  8. Re:Silence on Ask Slashdot: What Music do you Code By? · · Score: 1

Silence is the one thing that helps me focus. Music, Street noise, people talking, clocks, loud computer fans, etc just distract me when I'm trying to think. It's especially frustrating when the occasional difficult problem comes up.

When I put on my heavy-machinery type headphones (~$15 from Ace hardware) it's like my brain knows it's time to focus. The only problem is after about an hour or so they start to feel "funny" and I have to take them off for a few minutes.

  9. Heard about this while on the phone with best buy on The Matrix DVD Troubles · · Score: 2

I was calling a best buy last week and instead of putting me on hold, a clerk just put the handest on the counter. I heard someone (maybe a manager) tell him about the matrix problem, and from what I could tell, they would offer to exchange the affected dvd players for newer models that don't have that problem. Of course, don't quote me on this, because while I was trying to listen someone kept making announcements over their paging system. But if you bought your dvd player from best buy and you can't play the matrix, it might at least be worth a call.

  10. It's not always carpal tunnel on Carpal Tunnel Surgery? · · Score: 1

Okay, I'll try to make a very long story short:
I had all the symptoms of cts aabout 5 years ago. Numb hands, a kind of pain when typing. I'd wake up at night and my arms would be tingling - I couldn't even feel them. My arms felt like they belonged on a maniquin.
I spent several months worrying about this. My doctor couldn't tell me what was up. Had the test where they shoot electricty thru your arms to measuring the signal. Everything seemed normal.
One night I was on the couch, with my neck on the armrest. I heard a crack in my neck like one of my
vertabrae moved. One of my arms felt normal. I made an appointment the next day for a chiropractor. Turns out my back was completely out of whack and a nerve was being pinched (due to me exercising my abs but not my back). After a few sessions things started to return to normal. I haven't seen a chiropractor in several years, but if I let my back go the symptoms return.
Moral: It's not always your wrists. It may not be your back, but it could be your posture, or the way you hold your arms / shoulders when you type.
Your doctor probably won't recommend you see a chiropractor (since many thing they are quacks) but you should check out one on your own. Just avoid the ones who try to sell you a bunch of nutritional supplements.
However, if you do have cts, glucosamine sulfate and trans fatty acids (usually in the form of flax seed oil) are supposed to help the symptoms and reduce swelling.

  12. Solution: Money on Moderation Ideas · · Score: 1

If people want to moderate, why not have them pay for the privilege?

    Consider this:

Signing up to be moderator a costs $10 or so. The money goes to charity
chosen by the moderator (fsf, spi, eff, etc.) Meta Moderators would need
to pay a heftier fee ($50-$100).

All moderators could start out with XX points, and either gain or lose
based on the review of the meta moderators (who could only meta moderate
a moderator once - try saying that five times fist). Once they lose all
their karma points, they lose moderator privilges and their money. If
they get meta-moderated to a higher Karma, they would have the ability
to become a meta-moderator (possibly for free or for a reduced rate).

Meta moderators would be under the control of slashdot itself (I'm sure
andover.net could spring for the cost of a Meta Moderator Manager). Any
meta moderator caught abusing the system would loose their status and their
    money.

This way, it weeds out the moderators who are just in it to cause trouble
and some deserving non-profits get some cash. Plus, it goes great with chicken.
