  4. Re:JVC KD-SH99 on Head Units for Car MP3 Players? · · Score: 1

    I second that comment.

I also purchased this unit around November for around $280 (was $400 list at the time -- is now lower) I did quite a bit of reading and evaluation, and my two biggest concerns were MP3 Playback and an easily accessible Aux-in jack (Specificaly thinking of having a portable MP3 player like a Rio or iPod)

The reason for using choosing this unit was it's price, the fact that it had a mini-plug aux-in that was easily accessible on the front, and that it played MP3's better than any of the other units at the time.

For checking MP3 playback I specifically hauled in a CD of MP3's to various electronics stores around my area and tried out all of the MP3 units. The most common problems with other units were seek time, and the initial directory read on the disk. This unit was by far the fastest of all of the others I tested. I love it. (and have recomended it to other friends who now feel the same way)

Try looking around for a good deal, I picked mine up at Etronics (they currently list at $270)

How does this differ from the various *NIX flavors who attempt to mimic (for instance) System V behaviors?

FS layouts are part of SysV Layout (of course you also have BSD Layout).

I understand that *NIX variants with Sys V behaviors are largely inherited (Just their branch of the *NIX tree) but doesn't standarding on this behavior address some of this already. (Although maybe not libraries) I'm not arguing the points above -- I'm just looking for clarification

  6. What would Marx say? on The Cluetrain Manifesto · · Score: 1

Now right up front I must say that I have not read the Cluetrain Manifesto... But having *especialy* read Jason Bennet's take on the book I can't help but wonder what Karl Mark would say.

It appears to proclaim the internet as the medium to liberate, educate, and give voice to the poeple and upset the economic system we see today. It thereby seems like the Socialistic reform step towards Communism. To put an end to the exploitation of the worker from their identity (i.e. more than simple uncreative resources), to destroy the mass production machine created by the Industrial Revolution, and replace it with the Craftsmanship of the past. I can think of nothing else that drips with such Marxist beliefs.

    Question 2:
If this is indeed a Marxist or at least Marxist tinged book then why is the business sector frothing at the mouth over something they would usually shy away from if they were told it was fundamentaly Marxist/Communist/Socialistic?

    Just Thoughts

(Disclaimer: I just read some Marx yesterday, so I'm bound to want to read it in a little more into things than usual, but I can't help but see parallels)

  7. Why get an MCSE?... on MCSE Revolt Over NT4-W2K Plans · · Score: 1

No matter how stupid some people are that have an MCSE, it will continue to be valuable. Why?

Because unfortunately most of the HR drones and interviewers for IT positions wouldn't know if someone was lying to them about what it meant to change their screen resolution, little less be able to tell if someone honestly knows LAN-WAN, and System Administration basics.

Because of this they look for some way of identifying if these people have any IT skills at all... They've already been brainwashed by MS FUD, so all they're looking for is MS skill...
"Well Wow, look, Microsoft has it's own independent certification. That's exactly what I'm looking for!"

Now if you're looking for a job and you want to be very marketable, you could have advanced knowledge in quite a few areas... But if you try to explain this to the typical HR person or interviewer they'll have NO CLUE what you're talking about. But say you have an MCSE (Even if you're almost ashamed to say it) and they'll think you're extremely knowledgable. If not they'll wonder why you don't just get one, and then be done with it... especially if you let them know that it far below your level of knowledge.

That's why even if an MCSE means nothing... It still makes sense for many peoply to pursue.

  8. Re:source release on Interview: CmdrTaco and Hemos Tell All · · Score: 1

I think people should just cool off for a minute here. Instead of jumping on Rob for some of his comments get some perspective on whats going on. The various everyday workings of Slashdot take a lot of work, and Rob has a right to want to oversee a little bit of everything going on with Slashdot or jump in on something himself. So regardless of external help he is busy -- and he has every right to do what he wants to. He's still working towards the most important end goal, keeping Slashdot working in the way that we want.

Now toss in a deluge of flames all screaming about delays in the next release of Slash. Only one of the many things that Rob and the rest of the crew at Slashdot are working on. I too would begin to get annoyed by the constant requests for the next release. Which can explain the frustration and little flashes of anger in his response.

Just back off, be patient, and as long as Slash is released in good faith and a reasonably timely manner (with all cirmustances considered) then be happy.

Not really a solution to the whole email based virus proliferation problem though, that's only going to be solved by the software corporations of the world giving a shit about security concerns and the average Joe on the street expecting them and holding them responsible to addressing security concerns from v1.0 and not as a bugfix in v5.0 of their products after the implications of their actions bite them in the ass.
