  1. Re:Semi-topical link. on Ray Kurzweil's "The Singularity is Near" · · Score: 1

It is a great book (even if I haven't quite finished it yet) but I believe that "the rapture for nerds" is a phrase originally concocted by Ken Macleod in his Autumn Revolution series. And it's said by a character who is most definitely anti-singularity...

  2. Re:The interesting case of the UK on EU To Counter Echelon With Quantum Cryptography? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I have a feeling, if the population get a say, we will be out of Europe completely, the gates of the country will be shut, and the key thrown away. The British public is controlled by the gutter press (Mail, Times, Express, Sun) who are all vehemently Euro-sceptic. Well, controlled is too strong a word, but all the stories in those papers are anti-EU, anti-immigrant, anti-everything except good ole British values, like taking over half of the world.
And calling Britian the 51st state is just wrong. For a start, most of us object to the US, and so do most of the Foreign Office. The sympathy to the US is due to long standing ties, like us running you, and the fact we speak the same language. We try and imagine ourself as a bridge between the two continents. Not that that really works...

I don't know where you live, but around here it's just now becoming common for 'average joes' to buy cell phones at all, and the vast majority of them buy a plan, and get the phone for free (they don't buy phones). The phones that are given away for free are nowhere near the n-gage in terms of market price.

Well, in Europe, where I live, people have had phones for years, and they do buy the fancy-dan ones with colour screens and cameras and what not. It's how companies like Nokia make their money. If you just look at the phones most Europeans have, you'll realise that they like spending quite a bit of cash on them.
The N-Gage seems to be fundamentally a mobile phone. It doesn't need 100s of games, just a few good ones. In a sense, to compare it to the PSP or GBA is false, because those are only gaming machines. I think it will just be an advance on the simple games that phones have now, but with better graphics, gameplay and recognisable characters.

  5. If that ain't the sweetest on Halo 2 Real-Time Trailer Spreads Round Net · · Score: 3, Informative

If that ain't the sweetest darn thing I ever have seen! It was very impressive, to me, especially the graphics, although on the copy I saw it was rather hard to tell the difference between in-game and FMV. Maybe that just shows how good it is.
They have whole scenes where you are the gunner on the back of a vehicle, speeding through the streets shooting at Covenant tanks and running over aliens.
There is this bit where Master Chief leaps on the front of a Covenant Ghost and pulls the driver off the back. It was like watching a movie. If the game plays like it looks like it does, then it will be amazing.
And it has lots of plasma explosions, and those look cool. So it can't fail.

Is it just me, or does the music in the background of the trailer sound very much (i.e. exactly) like the main theme to Requiem for a Dream? Is this actually the music from the main movie, or is it just incidental trailer stuff? Does Clint Mansell know?

yeah, but, its a lot easier to put the mind-control super-potion in a central facility like a water plant than to have to supply it to all of the power units, and have to keep them updated with potion as well. i think an evil consortium would conclude that it is too expensive so this would probably be a "good thing".

the israeli press is not much better. israel has one of the worst records when it comes to press freedom. much better to read a british news paper, or an international journal from one of the countries that is actually under attack at the time.

But its not the corporations, it is the investors who have pushed for pure increase in stick prices over everything else. There is a quote by Noam Chomsky, i can't quite remember it, but it goes something like this:

"Unless you get to the source of power, which ultimately is investment decisions, other changes are cosmetic and can only take place in a limited way. To challenge the right of investors to determine who lives, who dies, and how they live and die - that would be a significant move towards the Enlightenment ideals. That would be revolutionary."

That is what we should be doing, stopping the pension funds and insurers and investors. Here in Britain they are talking about stopping state pensions in the near future and making everyone use private companies. This will only speed up the rot. At least, IMHO :)

Well, actually, no, electrons do not travel at the speed of light, it depends on the material they are moving through. Thats why your brain, even though it uses electrons for data transfer, does not work at the speed of light. Same thing with silicon/copper/etc. But optical circuits, well, this is gonna be cool.
This is gonna be really revelutionary.
