  1. Re:Makes me think... on The Myth Of The Tech Slump · · Score: 3

I can't think of any innovations at all. Sure, there were /enhancements/ and /realizations/, but all the real innovation happened already. Dot.coms weren't here for innovation, they were here to solidify the internet through business venture, and in that respect they suceeded. It is typical that in any new industry, 1 company will suceed for every 25 that fail. The dotcoms are no different.

In the Computer Telephony field. We began getting frantic emails from companies similar to ours that one company had Patented the "idea" of Computer telephony, basically making it illegal to do any kind of app with a phone line and a computer. This company actually sued and destroyed several small companies who could not hire a large group of lawyers to defend themselves. Luckily we ignored the whole thing and never got hit. I believe it all ended when they tried to go after somebody big (AT&T or someone of that caliber).

I agree that a high school would be a pain to maintain, but you were at the top CS school in the country and had to reinstall almost daily? I'm sorry but Ifind this hard to believe. I support several different NT/Unix integrated networks and have yet to have to do a complete win95 reinstall in the last 3 years save one, which was because someone kept installing bad winX clients on their PC. This probably goes back to the "a system is only as good as its admin" argument but any network having that many problems in it has greater flaws than a bad OS.

Well I haven't used the Sun setup yet but if it's like any other thin client setup then all apps (editing/spreadsheets etc..) are loaded on the server. This would not affect the thin clients resources as it is all based upon the servers capabilities.
