Airlines don't allow cell phones on planes for a reason that most don't understand - it's about control of information. When the passengers of a plane are in danger they are frequently kept in the dark to avoid the ensuing panic, and that wouldn't be possible if they all got phone calls about their plane being on television.
As a side note, I asked a Southwest stewardess why they turn off the lights after dark, even when it's too early to sleep. She was real shifty in her response so I kept pressuring her. She finally admitted that it's so passengers' eyes are adjusted correctly so they could see while getting off the plane after an accident!
Quick question - Isn't using quantum entanglement another form of massively parallel computation which many people seem to be discounting this Gedankenexperiment as?
"No, we hate IMMIGRANTS who EAT FUNNY FOOD AND DON'T BATHE DAILY because of their unbelievably rude practice of subjecting everybody else to their filthy reeking emissions. CONSUMERS OF FOREIGN DIETS smell like fucking shit.
Since so few FOREIGNERS through the years have taken it upon themselves to do the civilized thing and ensure that nobody around them has to experience their vile UNwashed fumes, the victims are banding together to help the FOREIGNERS learn what should have been common courtesy."
I've seen an internet video of this technology in action and it's a bit creepy. It's clearly a cause of concern but here's a solution that I would not have a problem with:
1. Johnny Law compiles a list of license plates that belong to vehicles "of interest" BEFORE they patrol. 2. Scanning software has the requirement that it only logs license plates belonging to said list.
You could even add another layer of checks-and-balances by having a third-party (judicial?) review of which license plates belong to the list.
End the Iraq War, and expand Eminent Domain? Wait, you forgot:
- Adhere fully to Kyoto Protocols in order to pave the road for global wealth redistribution
- Add an amendment to the Constitution ensuring a woman's right to choose
- National Healthcare
Yeah, there's a lot of potential to MANIPULATE the public fears of global warming towards a preferred set of political goals. Science shows that global warming trends are very likely, but there is NOT a concensus on the level of human contribution to the effect.
If you REALLY want to get away from burning fossil fuels, the solution is pretty simple. The Cold War is over, so purge your hippy-based aversions and GO NUCLEAR! That's a solution I would have no problem with.
A postulation that I heard once was that frequent cell-phone use was linked to an increased incidence of cancer on the SIDE OF THE HEAD that the phone was used on, but linked to a correspondingly LOWER incidence on the other side of the head.
I'm not saying that this is the case, but the subsequent studies that I've seen all seem to fit this possibility, including this one (AND the cited British one that apparently contradicts it). This study did not publish results about OVERALL (head) cancer risk, which is what it seems we should be worrying about...

Yeah, sure, getting 'em laid WOULD help them get away from games, but it's kind of a chicken-and-egg problem isn't it?
