The only purpose the Star Wars research serves is providing jobs to defence contractors. If it's fruitless then it's wasted money. If it's fruitful then its a white elephant. So why carry on funding it?
Sun's support is certainly impressive, especially if you're not used to it. And their hardware/software is impressive from a reliability standpoint.
But come on. This is a workstation. As long as it can stay up for a day at a time it's reliable enough, and it's cheaper to just keep a spare or five in the closet than to pay for the kind of support that people think of when they think Sun. Beyond the basic reliability that anything better than Windows 98 can provide, raw performance and price are going to be the deciding factors for this kind of system. Sun just can't play with the big PC manufacturers in both areas at once.
If this were a big Sun Fire box, you'd have a point. As it stands, Slashdotters are probably this machine's best hope: geeks with some disposable income who want a neat toy. After all, you bought a Blade 150, didn't you?
I hear that. For years I used a Sony GDM-E500 (21" FD Trinitron), and never wanted anything else. Finally, after moving for the third time in a year and a half I got tired of lugging the damn thing around and replaced it with a Dell 2001FP.
On a related note, if anyone in the Atlanta area wants to haul away a 21" Trinitron with a beautful picture but a noticeable gouge in the top right corner of the glass, or if someone wants a fairly ancient AS/400 I'd be glad just to get the damn things out of the house.
I feel the same way about a pair of Klipsch Heritage series speakers, but I wouldn't let those go for free:o.
I think most people who complain about the Python whitespace thing haven't written a line of Python. I'd never used a language where whitespace was significant before, but I haven't had a problem yet that was whitespace-related.
FWIW, though, Ruby is probably the closest thing out there to Python, but uses "end" keywords rather than whitespace to delimit blocks. If you absolutely refuse to use Python because of the whitespace thing, Ruby might be right up your alley.
As far as a new programmer, who isn't biased against whitespace-significant languages from the start, I think the biggest danger with Python is that the programmer will become spoiled and not want to learn anything else.
To be fair, OO.o is comparable to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The rest of those programs, while they are part of Microsoft Office, don't really compete with OO.o when split apart.
You can make and use your own certificate, verify the fingerprint yourself in your browser, and be able to trust an "invalid" cert at least as much as a "valid" cert from Thawte or Verisign.
This is when you'd want to "Accept Once." Once you've verified the fingerprint, you don't want to be bothered again unless the certificate changes.
Arrow keys and a dropdown of choices (a la Microsoft's autocomplete) are the best and most consistent way I can think of to do it. In most other dialog controls the arrow keys adjust the value of the control (sliders, spinboxes, etc.), so it makes sense that they would do the same in a text box.
Burning down a church destroys someone's property, generally involves trespassing, and potentially puts occupants in harm's way. Those are crimes.
Someone stating or thinking you are inferior because you are of another race does not destroy anything or, by itself, cause you harm. It is not a crime. It is, however, often combined with, or a cause of, criminal activity. In that case, the criminal activity is the legal problem.
Racism may make you sad, but your good mood is not what the law is there to protect.
I'm not the least bit racist, but I'm not about to feel entitled to dictate what racist people are allowed to say. Would I want them to be able to do the same to me?

Because I want my own R2-D2, beotch.

Of course. The person who holds copyright to the software has the right to license it however he or she likes to whomever he or she likes.
MySQL does this. You can use it under the GPL, or you can buy a commercial license from them and use it under that license instead.
Man, that would be such a funny prank!
Leaking helium... classic!
It was bad compared to what? All those good Star Trek movies? Heh...
Which is why they're working on a DRM-enabled digital input for your skull.
Haha Redhate. It's a funny name.

Yes, it's still a lot more than $0.
Is "a$$" supposed to be less offensive than "ass", or something?
Psst... check your mail.
The name seems more fitting after reading this story...
The problem with that idea is that blank paper is worth more than Canadian money.
That's the euphemism of the decade.

Obviously they are not entitled to use a computer, silly!
Of course, Mozilla isn't garbage. This is more than I can say for RealPlayer.
I can't tell if you're a troll or a manager. Which one is worse, again?

Tab completion also fucks up UI consistency for people who aren't expecting it. Tab in a dialog box is for moving between controls. That's it.
Norway sure sounds like a nice place. If only it were real...
You do have to be rather high to like Gentoo.
