  1. Re:Simple reason on The Sad History and (Possibly) Bright Future of TiVo · · Score: 1

I just went back to Comcast (yes, it was a hard decision) and in the Boston area they now offer an upgrade to have the TiVo software (and remote) on their usual box. I went for it and I've got to say it's better in most respects than my TiVo HD in my living room.

One favorite aspect - it has PiP when you're in the 'now playing' menu, etc. Love it!

The extra cost per month for Comcast TiVo was at most $5, which is less than one of the cable cards in the TiVo. The box was free - I just don't get to keep it when I switch supplier again, hence I'm keeping the TiVo HD as well.

...Everything I need is easier to get at with fewer clicks, and working properly with styles is finally a snap.

I find it very hard to believe that you actually find it easier to work with styles in Word 2007.

Select text with the mouse and what comes up? A lovely little dialog that allows you to apply ad-hoc formatting very easily. No mention of styles there though (even character styles).

Trying to specify a style by typing the name? You have to click on the ribbon drop down and then apply styles (or know the Alt-shift-s key combination) and then a stupid floating dialog appears. Try to dock it and it takes up the full height of the screen and several inches of width!

Otherwise you have to move the mouse up to the ribbon and scroll through the multitude of auto-generated styles to find the ones you set up yourself (if you finally worked out how to do that). There is a load of manual set-up to do that does not carry over from document to document.

I would give it a C at most.

  3. Re:Motorola uses micro USB format but not micro US on Handset Vendors Plug Micro-USB Charge Ports · · Score: 1

Motorola are not the only ones that do this. My wife has a Blackberry, Mio GPS and Motorola Bluetooth headset. They each have micro USB sockets but none of the in-car chargers that came with each unit work with any of the other units. Bizarrely, Belkin did an in-car charger that charges all three (and my Garmin GPS) with no quibbles. However, they don't seem to do it any more and her sister has stolen it back! The other Belkin charger that we have does not work with all of them. If anyone knows where it's possible to get another of these 'truly universal' universal in-car chargers please let me know!

I think you've hit on a very good point re: speed limits. In the half mile from the highway to my house the speed limit changes at least 4 times with similar conditions around it - width of road, number of houses, etc. What's even more annoying is that the change is by 5mph each time, what's the point of that? Similarly on the highway I'm amazed at how often the speed limit changes with barely any notification. I'm a Brit expat in Boston, working hard to avoid the Massholes...

  5. Re:Old news on Mathematicians Solve the Mystery of Traffic Jams · · Score: 1

I find this especially true in Massachusetts where I now live. Back at home in England you could leave a reasonable space and absorb speed differences. Here the minute you leave something like a car-length space it'll be filled by an idiot from a parallel lane jumping in front of you. It actually slows traffic down more because I then have to back off to leave a safe distance between him and me. It makes it worse when trying to move over to turn off at an exit because people just won't give space even if you actually use your indicators.
