  1. How is Jurassic Park not a tag? on Extinct Mammoth, Coming To a Zoo Near You · · Score: 1

It might avoid the 10,375 people coming in here and replying with OH MY GOD DID YOU SEE JURASSIC PARK, anyway. Yes, internet. I am fairly certain that a few people did see that movie.

Well, at at least some colleges (such as the one where I work), a mandatory attendance grade is required across the board for all classes. I'm not sure how much leeway the professors have within these parameters, but they are, at least, required to take attendance and enforce a maximum absence policy.

And what, exactly, is wrong with it being "my time" after 5PM? If I already spend a third of my day working, why should I be expected to put in more than that? You may perceive it as a lack of work ethic, but realize also that you are putting undo pressure on people who do have personal lives or obligations that would keep them from spending three or four extra hours at the computer, plugging away at something that could easily be left to the next day without any real detriment. Before someone makes assumptions (particularly because I'm female), I am not saying this as an angry parent whose child-related obligations get in the way of their career success-- like you, I have no interest in children (although I could certainly see how someone who does choose that lifestyle might be a little bitter). But really, working so many long hours is detrimental to your health and sanity-- it's a buzzword, but "work/life balance" does have its place.

  5. Re:Leveraging the university? on RIAA Announces New Campus Lawsuit Strategy · · Score: 1

I do not think this is the case. At the university where I work, I am in charge of managing the influx of RIAA/MPAA Cease and Desist orders. They provide us with an IP address, the IT department identifies whose address it is, and we send them a letter warning them not to do it again. They are required to meet with the school's DMCA officer (as far as I know, there is one appointed at every school) as well as with the dean, and are also required to take their computer to the help desk to be "cleaned." The letter actually warns the students to back up any files they would like to keep. Although it rarely goes that far, on a second offense they are assigned community service hours. The *AA gets no information from us as to the identity of the student. They receive a note saying that the offending computer was cleaned off and the issue dealt with and no further information.

This seems to be something that is prone to happen to music-players. How many of you called your portable tape-players Walkmans when you were younger? I know I did, and I know I most certainly had the $10.00 K-Mart special, rather than the Sony device. This could even be applied to Victrola being a synonym for all record players.

  11. Re:France are the biggest influence in the EU... on French Parliament Fights iPod and iTunes · · Score: 1

You're not quite right. When you drag and drop an MP3 file into iTunes, the iTunes software is not converting it to another format, it is simply renaming the file for its directory. If you look at the files on the iPod (you can do this by selecting 'view hidden folders,') you can see that all of the files are, in fact, MP3s, and will play fine in winamp. You can also copy things off of an iPod this way, provided you want to go through the trouble of renaming them.

I believe that the reason they call it an MP3 player may be because it plays MP3s. Saying that they can't sell their devices as MP3 players is like saying that the International House of Pancakes should be taken to court for false advertising because they also serve french toast.

  13. Probably Not What I *Should* Say... on eBooks - What's Holding You Back? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I'm a librarian who specializes in audio/blended learning, so I guess I'm supposed to be an advocate of this sort of thing. And of course, I msut concede that there are benefits to books being available in formats other than paper, and that they are helpful to people who learn differently, etc. etc. The truth, however, is that I absolutely hate not having a physical book in front of me. Many of the reasons behind this have been listed above; there are the DRM restrictions as well as the expense of purchasing a portable reading device to contend with. Additionally, considering that I spend 8+ hours a day at work staring at a computer screen, I sometimes find it somewhat refreshing to not be tethered to technology for a little while and to just relax on the window-seat with a book, a cat, and a cup of tea. I'm certainly not technophobic, but the portability and permanence of a normal, paper book is just something I don't know that I feel can be replaced.
