It looks like something that's coded into the games, and the ISPs route that traffic differently, which is why a dedicated dial-up service for PowerPlay 1.0 is set to be introduced in a couple of months.
Carmack isn't working specifically on the PowerPlay standard, but it'll obviously be in the games he codes in the future.
The/. post doesn't begin to explain what this is about, so here you go:
From a Gamespot write-up on PowerPlay: PowerPlay, a set of standards and protocols that will apply to both game developers and Internet service providers (ISPs). By working on both sides of the problem, PowerPlay promises to bring LAN-like gameplay to a modem near you. If you think that sounds like something that is well beyond the range of a single company, you are right--and that's why Newell got Cisco Systems involved.
Newell is Gabe Newell of Valve, makers of Half-Life. The reason Carmack's doing this is to contibute to the PowerPlay project.
John...wants to take a stab at rewriting the Linux IP stack and a soft modem driver to see how much latency he can remove, and use that to pressure Microsoft into cleaning up the Windows stack. That would be really useful data to have.
The way I see it, as soon as the cheaters saw how the code did what it did, it was much easier to cheat, although this may not be the case. I'm aware of the cheating pre-release, hell, I loved Quake then, and still play it (along with Q2 and Q3A). I was just comparing the possibility of someone gaining knowledge of the innards of the game and using it to their advantage, which is much easier with the full Quake source release than with this partial UT release.
Open source libraries, executables, and tools relevant to the Unreal Tournament engine. This project will focus on improving the quality of the UT Linux port through open development as well as creating a community of open UT engine developers.
Notice, this is not some kind of full code release that will facilitate mass cheating a la Quake 1 source release.
What you're referring to is the Quake 1 source release from the other week. This is by no means a release of the entire code for Unreal Tournament. It's a release of the public engine headers and assorted files, not of the entir game. This is to facilitate modifying of the gameplay. Quake and Quake2 had similar releases, Quake3 should have it soon (Carmack, please!:-)).
Yeah, I've been affected by this stuff too. My school (www.mc.maricopa.edu) decided to shut down THE ENTIRE NETWORK from Noon (our time) today until Jan 2. Huh?
No e-mail, no Netscape roaming access, no web pages, no FTP, no Telnet.
Do they really want me to get drunk and party? Cuz that's the only thing left. =)
Good point. I was sort of thinking of disabled cars on the shoulder of a highway or something, but if you're heading straight towards a *parked* car there's really no tecnology that's going to keep you safe from your own ignorance. =)
I saw a commercial for this earlier last week - it looked like a small part of the windshield was changed to a HUD, so the rest was just normal vision. I think what this does is provide night-vision ahead of you, but allows regular vision to the sides and above.
The only problem I see is that parked cars (i.e. turned off) would be invisible by this, so you're sort of screwed in that respect. =)
Am I the only one here who wonders what this bar graph is about? It's not labeled, nor is it a thumbnail for a clearer, normal-sized one. (along with the others)
Well, looks like the purple team beat out the others that last year, huh? =)

I can't seem the find the phrase you quoted anyhere in the review - also, the page you linked doesn't exist within that review (fury-14.html).
Where was this?

But still, I do agree with you.
