  1. despatched on Windows 7 Released Early In UK · · Score: 1

I just got a despatch Notification from Amazon that my Windows 7 Home Premium is in the Royal Mail... so I'll maybe get it tomorrow, but probably next week if the strike goes ahead.

  2. UK - HP 'free' is £21.99 on Hidden Fees Discovered For "Free" Windows 7 Upgrade · · Score: 1

Our supplier insight.com/uk which had 'free' plastered all over their site when making the purchase I had this issue. After purchase I decided to look at the 'free' upgrade path. After being redirected to HP then a 3rd party website I was required to enter the serial numbers of the units. Only after this verification was I told it was a cost of £21.99 per license for postage/packaging and handing etc etc (no economies of scale for the 3 I wanted). at no point in the T&Cs does it mention the actual price that will have to be paid (only Insight displayed the upgrade as 'free') they say there are charges but does not state what they are. So how was I supposed to know what a reasonable charge was for these âoefreeâ upgrades without 1st having to order the items, take delivery of them and then unpack them? It therefore seems logical that their Terms and Conditions should go beyond the stating there may be costs and be a little more forthcoming about the actual charges. Insight are happy to mislead buyers with the words âoefreeâ. Iâ(TM)m interested to know what amazing courier service is being employed and what shiny gold plated box the copy of the software will come in since it requires £21.99 to post and package a DVD, this leads me to believe that the whole £21.99 is not the incidental P&P charges and that someone if making a little profit from this supposed âoefreeâ upgrade. Surely I can forgo a large part of this cost by downloading an ISO from them and them e-mailing me the CD keys...? strangely not an option... So it seems it's a rather cunning practice which, no doubt, is designed to mislead.

  3. Re:Yes, and yes. on Hardy Heron Making Linux Ready for the Masses? · · Score: 1

I had those sort of grub probelms prior to Hardy Heron Hardy Heron (8.04) now comes with the Wubi installer, thus negating the usual problems with grub and HDD configurations. For the casual or interested user Wubi allows for a simple hassle free alternative installation that simply allows for Ubuntu to install to a folder structure within the existing Windows NTFS file structure. So no free disks or partition required prior to install, just free disk space required within the NTFS partition. Allowing a simple dual boot option via the Windows boot loader (adding a line to the boot.ini to then call grub). It's not the ideal setup, but it works and avoids a lot of the initial setup problems that would detract the casually interested Windows out there. Once people have tried this setup and decided they like what they see (like me) and they've got to grips with some of the nuances of Linux and Ubuntu then they can look at 'proper' installation as the permanent solution. Another part of the Ubuntu success also lies is the forums and support you can get. The learning curve is not as sharp or steep as it used to be. I spend 95% of my time within the Ubuntu Heron environment now and completely love it. I just need to wait for the solutions that require dependency on MS and I'll been gone for good. Most shockingly - I'm a Windows XP/NT/2003 Sys admin and M$ is what I support daily. I'm confident enough now with Ubuntu to how start recommending it to friends and will be installing it on my mother home PC soon.

  4. Re:Every six months? on BBC's iPlayer To Be Crossplatform · · Score: 3, Interesting

Rather simply the platyer is tied to MS. At the moment the DRM is Microsoft and the player only works with Internet Explorer so cross platform is going to require a complete overhaul and re-write. To be honest I registered, downloaded and try to use and it was a process I care not to go through again. the hoops you are made to jump through make no sense at all. After about a 48 hour turn around from registering, downloading and installing the application. the 1st and only pro gramme I downloaded was 220MB and then refused to play due to DRM license being missing and the KB solution was to delete it and download it again. At that point I un-installed the rubbish. This player is in Alpha as far as I'm concerned, most people won't put up with the hassle that I went through to not watch something. A complete an utter disappointment, but that's what I come to expect that at the end of the day is government driven. Nice to know my TV tax is being well spent as usual.

  5. Re:It's all about posture. on Google Staff MD on Carpal Tunnel & RSI · · Score: 1

Posture does playa large role, I had RSI in my left hand (tingling int he pinky and ring finger that lasted 8 months) due to my elbow resting on a table edge. The cause was simple. I was contracting for a company at the time and I was seated at a temp desk where the desk and the monitor were at angles, my right arm was fully rested on the table, my left was 1/2 on/off the table as a result I got a rub going the joint of my elbow that resulted in the nerve being costanty bumped and inflamed. It took 6 months after I left the contract to clear. I can tell you it was not fun, rather worrying - especially when the doctor said that if it didn't clear after an extended period an operation was required! I've been in my curret job for 3 1/2 years sit at the straight edged desk and look straight at my monitor with my mouse and keyboard correctly and carefully placed to ensure no excessive rubbing of any of my bits!

  6. Re:What would you demand from your IT users? on What Would You Demand From Your IT Department? · · Score: 2

I have to agree, this sounds like a lack of budget problem to me! Far to often a company expects the world from their IT dept but spend more on Coke, tea and sugar per head annually than they do on their IT. Give them a £70-100K budget and the problems described here disappear into thin air. 1 TB of storage on a NAS is Cheap. Backup hardware/software is relatively cheap too. The problem is not the IT dept, you'll invariably find they are overworked, underpaid and supporting at ailing infrasctucture with no budget. Point the finger at management, the fact that it's deteriorated to this point is a management issue not one of competance. Rounding on your IT guys in this situation is going to lead to a few of them say "FO" and walking out and then you'll have an old, crappy infrastructure AND no one that knows how it's currently being help together.
