I keep three tape backups with the oldest being rotated through my safe deposit box at the bank where I keep all of my papers that need to be safe from fire and theft.
If you keep stock certificates, savings bonds, or other financial instruments in the safe deposit box, the fee is deductible on schedule A.
The "Internet Tax Freedom Act" just keeps NEW taxes from being imposed aimed specifically aimed at the Internet.
You ALWAYS have an obligation to pay your home state sales tax - you are required by your home state to keep a record of all out-of-state purchases, and send in a check to your state treasury for the amount of state sales tax that you didn't pay.
I like to listen to "esoteric" music - i.e. not anything on mass market radio. I will GLADLY pay a small subscription fee for my 1.5 hours per daily commute. I have over 2,000 CDs and a CD player in my car, but this what I've been waiting for! I dislike the hassle of keeping the CDs out of the car (due to the hot days and sunlight) and trying to choose several each time I leave the house is a hassle. I have always been an avid radio listener, but with todays mega-conglomerate "programming for the ignorant masses" who just want to hear the latest Britney Spears makes me puke. If you take that $10 and divide it by the amount of time you can hear a decent selection of music WITHOUT having to worry about what happens to your CD collection - it's cheep.
Of course - some people might not care about these things, and they are not the audience for either of the services.
But it's still cool - and most geeks like music - I know I do!
The only thing that I can't decide is whether to buy from Crutchfield, or wait until the local car stereo installer (Colorado) has them. Decisions, decisions...
In response to calling "capitalist-libertarian" a "narrow" concept - let me respond:
"Should people be allowed to sell their organs?"
Yes - if they are only harming or benefiting themselves, of course they should! I own my body! The "government" doesn't. This DOESN'T mean that someone ELSE should be able to sell my organs.
"Should they be allowed to sell themselves into slavery?
Yes - if they are only harming or benefiting themselves, of course they should! I own my body! The "government" doesn't. This DOESN'T mean that someone ELSE should be able to sell me into slavery.
"Should people be allowed to discuss and plan pricing of their products with competitors?"
Yes - PEOPLE should, but a Corporation is NOT a person, as much as the US courts seem to decree otherwise.
"Should people be allowed to sign away their fair-use rights?"
Yes - A PERSON should be able to do so, but there should not be a law FORCING someone to do so.
"Should people be allowed to bribe officials?"
This activity has gone on from the beginning of time. If you mean should "Corporations" be allowed to bribe officials - of course not.
The point here is that I should be allowed to do what I want with or to myself - that only affects my flerbage and not others.
You cannot successfully keep persons from harming themselves - you can only hope to keep them from harming others.
I personally have been boycotting the RIAA for the last 3 months - and as a normal purchaser of over 20 CDs per month (on average) this should have some effect. I encourage all others to do the same.
I have this (or a reasonable facsimile).
Its called XM satellite radio.
I have one XM receiver in my car and one XM receiver in my house which is wired into speakers in every room.
I pay a small monthly fee for more music than I can possibly afford to buy, with great selection.
My 2,400 CD (all purchased) collection sits mostly idle.
I stopped buying retail CDs a year ago.
I still go to concerts and buy directly from artists and their web sites.
I still listen.
I havn't laughed so hard in days!!!!!
My compliments!

This applies to Internet sales and catalog sales.
Now - how many of you do this?
I thought so.....
