I doubt Microsoft actually wants DRM, but the industry is forcing them to use it. Apple eventually became such a powerhouse in the industry they were able to twist some arms to have some DRM free music. I think once Microsoft becomes more of a -popular- media company they will begin to gain some leverage and trim the DRM. DRM -at least in my opinion- will die eventually, the question is what media company is going to cause its death, and obviously at this point it is not Microsoft.
Thing is, for commercial accounts Google lets you use your own domain name, e.g. Fred@FredEnterprises.com, not limited to Fred@FredEnterprises.gmail.com. That's got to be more of an attractor than keeping the domain name of an ISP you're familiar with.
You can do this with free accounts too, as I assume by commercial you mean Google Apps? Anyhow, even if you are talking about free accounts, free accounts are able to pull email from POP3 servers into the Gmail account and use the pulled address to reply...here is an example; so really as long as you were able to keep the POP3, you could always keep your old account.
The only reason XM censored "Opie and Anthony" in the first place was to show the FCC that they are "responsible" so that will get in their good graces to pass the XM - Sirius merger. These protesters don't even know what they are protesting, by smashing their radios they are making it harder on XM and Sirius both. In full disclosure, I'm an XM subscriber (and I didn't smash my radio).
I wouldn't call "piracy" off-topic in this instance, the article original post does make a pretty strong hint at piracy; i.e. "Everyone has their official restore disks handy, right?"
I think you mean "had" shown, because last I checked Sears Holdings profits rose 27% in the fourth quarter of 2007. I hardly call that a "real" inability.
That, and this is what I find interesting. Kmart bought Sears for $11 billion. Sears has been around for a number of years. They are known for their kenmore (albeit rebranded) and craftsman product lines. They have real inventory, real stores, and real employees. Chrysler was recently sold for 7.4 billion.
The Sears deal turned out to be a gold mine, because it formed Sears Holding company, and need I speak of Eddie Lampert's role in that? Chrysler was sold for a loss by the at one time Daimler-Benz because they have no idea how to control costs and debt. I think the general consensus is that information about what the consumer wants is more important than the actual item, because you can learn to sell anything to the consumer once you realize who to market to and how to market to them. If you take that stand point, over time the information will have a higher return on investment than the retailer, automotive company or what have you.
I love this stuff so much! Arguing with an American Christian is like arguing with a illiterate about Shakespeare. They have both read about the same amount of the book they profess to know so much about.
To be honest, I got this very impression of you by reading your post.
You obviously don't have much knowledge other than the basics of the religion, even if you are religious. I've been scrolling down this topic for a while now, and I keep coming across people who claim that religion is bunk because the believers don't know science, when it's apparent that the people who seem to know science don't know religion. It's kind of hypocritical, that one can claim that the other side knows nothing, when they know nothing about the other side. It's almost mind blowing.
For the most part, I don't care. I do care, however, when the belief in God results in some real world action that, but for that belief, ordinarily would not, and I don't care for the action. So belief is ok, but using that belief to create and pursue a political agenda, solely or predominantly because of that belief, is not. I get to feel, under those circumstances, that we would all be better off if that belief did not exist.
Even if there was no religion, there would still be "political agendas" associated with beliefs of all kinds, be it Scientific etc. The issue of Global Warming is and excellent example of that happening, it's human nature; and religion is very human, no matter how much you paint it as lunacy.
There are various interpretations of the creation story, I think the most interesting thing about religion -and I am religious- is that no one actually agrees about most anything. Also, unless you know Greek or Hebrew, which I doubt you do, you probably don't know original verses anyhow. Religion is usually given a "bad name" because people shove ideas down other people's throats instead of accepting another's belief. You are basically using midrash to connect your idea, which is not the same as pointing out a simple verse misconception such as the earth being created in 7 days, when it's technically 6 because he rested on the 7th and so on and so forth.
While I find your post kind of insightful, I think it's also pretty ignorant in its statements about religion. Considering a) early Jews did not believe in hell/the "devil" or even think about it, much less really even believe in an after life. b) You painted multiple religions with a seemingly radical one (just as most paint Christians as Evangelists, Muslims as terrorists, and Jews as greedy bankers). I am a believer that people are afraid of/criticize things they do not understand, and it seems from you post -and I could be wrong- that you do not have a background in any sort of religious studies, and really don't have any more right criticizing a belief than I do to tell an Aethiast that he is going to hell. If you don't like something or are going to criticize something, at least know something about it.
Actually, it's a common misconception, even by creationists themselves; The earth was created in 6 days, not 7, he rested on the 7th day, at least according to the all of the Abrahamic religions.
I wish I had mod points so I could mod you up; That is by far the greatest debunk in history, despite its age. The secret message on the $100 bill was the icing on the cake of comedy genius.
Then why would they make their next operating system 64-bit only? Seems contradictory to their "status quo", and still that doesn't have anything to do with the release date or anything I said in the previous post.
The problem is Microsoft needs Windows simultaneously to be the same old operating system you've been using for years and the latest, greatest thing, and it can't be both
Hence I said Vista was part of a transitional model, the next release will probably be much more swift. Microsoft's bottom line is impacted by equity, Microsoft is a cash machine, but they have lost a substantial portion of their net worth in stock. This is in part due to unpolished/delayed releases and thus bad PR, which seem to hide the value of the overall company (good will) as opposed to exposing it which Apple and Google have done with their produce innovations. Note their company P/Es are much higher than Microsoft's even though Microsoft is still growing at a fairly rapid rate. There is market demand, and there is...stock market demand, I doubt Microsoft wants to remain a $300 billion company from now until the end of time, which is essentially the same as it has been since early 2002 despite its growth.
I don't know why you were modded up, your comment was pretty redundant; if we consider that it will be 64-bit only, don't you think the upgrade cycle will have been shrunk? Considering you only have to make one standing core edition? Even if the product is pushed back it won't take as long as it once did, given this information. I'm sure Windows Vista is more part of a transition model than it is an actual key operating system.
While I take note of your Microsoft pun seemingly seen in a Mac commercial, which is all too typical and was completely expected when I saw "Microsoft" in the article title; I was under the impression that the next Windows would be released much quicker than Vista, in fact I was under the impression that "Vienna" is what pushed Vista out of the door with the lack of some of the earlier features promised. 2009 isn't very far away.
To be realistic, they are most likely moving to Linux because of their merger with Euronext and the need for market integration to form the first "transatlantic" stock and derivatives exchange. I'd also like to know which part of their system will be run by Linux, it could just be their messenger system on their Hybrid platform (which the back-up in the flow of messages caused the "big" down day a few months ago on the Dow Jones Industrial). Archipelago, NYSE bonds, NYSE Hybrid etc...which part of NYSE-Euronext is switching?
Even still I think many people are ignoring the size of the global marketplace and its pace of growth. I doubt Microsoft cutting off XP licensing through various OEMs would be enough to have put a dent in such a large number. Microsoft's global distribution is much more broad than it was with the release of Windows XP and other OS predecessors, and the Asian market has a much larger consumer base and wealth than it once had. I think it would be interesting to see how many copies have been pirated vs how many have been purchased legally.
A private equity firm would buy AMD before they let it go out of business, heck even a company like Texas Instruments wouldn't surprise me in buying AMD before letting it go out of business. Mind you Ford lost 7.4 Billion dollars and are still in business. There is simply too much brand recognition and assets associated with the name "Advanced Micro Devices" for it to "evaporate".
You can block advertisements and scripts, you can't block your government, at least not without being arrested. On this note, Google is voluntary. However, Hewlett Packard burning your CD-RW drive's serial number on the CDs you just burnt or the serial number -in code- of your printer on the back of the paper you just printed -in code-, are not at all voluntary. CNBC ran a good special on such things. Watch if you dare, because it IS on Google Video...oh no there is a Google Advertisement at the top of the page on Slashdot, grab your tinfoil hat!....I am being extremely sarcastic, if you didn't catch it.
I've had the complete opposite experience, I've never, if hardly ever had spam not filtered correctly. Are you purposefully signing up for newletters, or even reporting spam to Google in the first place? It seems that your 5 accounts speak volumes to the answer to that question, imo.

Actually as a percentage of price to growth, the deal was nearly in-line with Google's acquisition, no where near twice.

Eric Schmidt does sit on the board of Apple, I'm sure they found common ground.

Additional figures show that 95% of Slashdotters still don't have a chance.
