  1. Re:iPhone 3GS will support iOS 6 on Windows Phone 8 Officially Unveiled · · Score: 1, Interesting

iOS also isn't running on a full fledged OSX core. Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 share the same core. If Apple were to announce that OSX and iOS now had the same core, they would have to do the exact same thing. This hurts WP7 users, but is great for developers. You can have an App seamlessly operate on all Windows platforms. That's Microsoft's bet, we'll see if it works. I think there is a good chance it will work.

I'm assuming you didn't watch the presentation, Windows Phone had a Siri-esque features for a while before Siri launched. They could have the features and you'd never know it; since as you said you've never seen a Windows Phone, and have obviously never made an effort to try one...which just shows that you're kind of a troll. The emphasis on cores was to show that the OS is versatile and will be around...and a backbone for many years to come.

I don't think that's true, perhaps some app features won't be supported. Then again, with WP's low market share making a huge switch like this is a lot less damaging than if, say, Apple had done it. But I am fairly certain that WP7 will be able to run some WP8 apps.

They are integrating Windows Phone/Windows 8/Xbox applications which in demos they've shown can be ported by only changing 1-3 lines of code. I don't know Microsoft's overall fate, but their direction is logical...I just don't know how well it's going to be received.

  6. Re:Zune or Xbox? on Microsoft Announces 'Surface' Tablet · · Score: 1

It runs faster than iTunes for one, iTunes on Windows is a bastard stepchild that runs terribly. Zune isn't a music library Nazi; every time I have installed iTunes (usually for an iTunes exclusive) it tries to take over my music library instantly, even going so far as copying my entire library to a completely separate location. I can sync tons of devices and share music across those devices without having them tagged on my account. I can copy entire contents of phones/Zunes without it prompting me for account passwords and DRM nonsense. I once tried to hook up my friend's iPhone to get a video, and I literally couldn't do it. His account was tapped out on devices, the only thing I could do is "back up" the device which is all encoded...and thus completely useless to what I was trying to do. There are some things iTunes is better at though, their store for one, is vastly superior to Zune's.

I hate this Zune example, who even still uses an iPod? Hardly anyone does. They use their iPhone. Microsoft missed the boat with PMP so badly that it literally entered the market as the market was moving on to something else. This is not the case with the tablet, the tablet is tested and true, it will be around for a long long time. That was not the case of specialty music players which...aside from the nano is pretty much dead. No one gets excited about an iPod release, it's all about iPhone and iPad. Zune wasn't a failure because there was no market for Zune itself...it was because the market was already saturated and in decline.

Hate to tell you kids, most computers run Windows and if a poor family can afford a Windows machine it gives them a fighting chance in the workplace in a world that is growing more dependent on computers and less on manual labor. Monsanto is a subject that has so much hyperbole on both sides (usually those against GMOs), calling the Monsanto pollen a "contaminant" is way overboard and doesn't make much sense at all. Saying Monsanto doesn't attack small farmers is a bit of a stretch, but all companies abuse copyright/patent laws. Just loosen up the laws, reform copyright, patents, licensing, etc. This is not as easy as "it's a contaminant!, let farmers sue!" (and wouldn't they sue the -other- farmer anyhow? Not Monsanto?) Instead it a genuine problem across the spectrum of commerce. From Apple, Motorola, Microsoft and yes, Monsanto. Only if there is outright infringement and theft of a technology, pollination doesn't contaminate fields and and pollination isn't the same as stealing a seed. Patent laws are the vast problem...let's not get all sue happy in the other direction. The last thing the U.S. needs is more lawsuits over stupid, trivial things

  17. My experience on Ask Slashdot: What's Your Beef With Windows Phone? · · Score: 5, Interesting

I have been using Windows Phone for a good 6 months now, and I really do feel backward when using people's iPhones. That being said iPhone has the ecosystem that I am envious of, if a friend is playing a game, very often WP doesn't have it (yet.) So that's very frustrating. I think a lot of people just go with the platforms their friends have, the tile system is a bit jarring for those not familiar with it, and it could be improved a lot (sometimes Metro is just -too- simplistic.) However, once you are used to the system, it's a lot more intuitive than iOS. People complain about the tiles, but when using friends phones they have a sea of icons that honestly just hurt my eyes to scroll through. A lot of people think the WP list system is the wrong approach, but tapping on a letter jumps you to the program you want.

WP's biggest flaw is that it is so late to the game, if you walk into an AT&T store, expect to have an iPhone pushed on you, if you walk into a Verizon store, expect an Android device to be pushed on you. Microsoft made the mistake of not getting in bed with one of the major carriers. Google & Verizon/Apple & AT&T have a lot of power over the purchases of potential WP users. I've walked into Verizon stores with the -only- WP device being treated like the step child, and AT&T stores have had WP booths with the phones all powered down. It's pathetic. Old habits die hard. I do think all 3 of the OSes are very good in their own right, but why WP is lagging sort of baffles me, I'd expect it to at least have some interest among youth looking for Xbox Live integration. The Lumia phones are gorgeous, but honestly on the wrong carrier....Verizon should have been the Lumia's focus. AT&T's is pretty saturated with iPhone. Microsoft shot themselves in the foot with their half-assed Kin device on Verizon.

So, my basic answer is carriers, carriers, carriers, even more so than developers.
