Sometimes I just don't understand Americans and the fear of the government. In Australia, it is quite common to have police stop every person and require a breath test. If you fail the breath test, you then have to take a blood test which is the evidence used against you in court. It's not a problem, it's not a slippery slope -- it's just trying to stop people killing themselves and others on the roads. Geez.
I think the exact opposite! Awarding this massive project to someone OTHER than Telstra who already have a monopoly (with their existing infrastructure), will force both parties to compete for customers. This is a win for the little people! (Unless you're a shareholder, but you'd be used to losing by now, right?)
Well, given the stats in the summary, it says that 60% of all OS sales in October were Apple. This makes a lot of sense considering they just released a new OS. The more interesting fact is that (therefore) 40% of sales were Windows, despite the latest version being available for almost a year now.
Third, WGA is going to be mandatory for downloading the final version of IE7. What's the piracy rate for Windows XP again?
the total number of people who won't download this = people who don't use windows + people with illegal versions of windows + people with legal versions of windows who don't want M$ spyware.
i'm running a 100% legit version of windows but i still refuse to let it install WGA.
I agree with you on this, but I do see a vaguely positive side-effect of the "one-release-every-5-years" strategy: it gives people time to catch up. IE6 is a completely dog of a browser, but at least you can build webpages to its assumed standard instead of having to worry about people still having older versions. Compare to Flash - i occasionally do some development in Flash, but to make sure it will work on most people's browsers, you still have to compile for Flash Player 5, even though they're up to #8 now.
The same applies to Windows, but probably even moreso, since upgrading your browser or flash player is free, and windows ain't. Imagine how much of a pain in the A$$ it would be having to re-purchase windows every 1 or 2 years just to stay on the cutting edge.

and I for you

The body was 2m long, but... "The tentacles had been badly damaged, so the overall length of the animal could not be determined."
