No, there's far more BSD code in OSX than a typical linux distro. Large portions of the OSX kernel, and almost the entire unix userland are BSD. Linux only uses a few random BSD bits and pieces.
We don't have nice GPU accelerated drivers for most cards. Both nvidia and ati provide shitty broken drivers that cause lockups and have lots of random an unknown incompatabilities, and are a HUGE fucking pain to try to get working.

You don't need to manually insert, view or edit complex data via SQL, there's plenty of graphical database admin tools out there. If you can create the tables to begin with, then you can obviously put data in the tables too. Hence scaffolding serves no purpose besides tricking people into thinking rails makes things faster than it really does.
