So companies like Immunity reverse-engineer an identified Microsoft patched vulnerability, release an exploit and expect kudos? Impressive as it may sound, I would be more interested to hear of a company discovering a vulnerability and releasing it to Microsoft so it can be patched. If I can't create a virus/worm to wreak havoc on Windows machines, what makes these companies able to reverse-engineer and release the "0-day" exploit? It almost seems unethical. Also, it seems like Immunity and others are trying to make a name for themselves rather than being interested in user security.

Uhh.. I know this is getting redundant but you could even count all the NGOs that we fought in Vietnam too. They would be considered terrorists by today's standards. Oh, and what about the "rebels" we fought in the Phillipines? Democrat, Republican, Liberal, or Independent - someone is never going to pleased with the presidency and will be hellbent to blow the whole US into smithereens. You don't even have to be a superpower anymore to have terrorists coming after you. Look at Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, etc.. The US is just the one that is making the most 'noise'.

What? In the US, I have had my cellphone for 5 years (Cingular and Nextel/Sprint). I receive a print-out of all incoming and outgoing calls. They give it to you so you can contest the costs of calls. BellSouth also gives you a printout of long-distance calls for a regular landline. This has been done for years!

This is different than AOL. The reason is because I am only talking about searches which drove people to the site. For example, if I type in "poor outlook on life" - there are no adsense links. But, if I type in "poor outlook on life plugin" - an adsense link pops up. Plus, web logs already track what users typed in to reach websites and are listed under "Search Query Terms" in most web log parsing programs. If they are worried about IPs being exposed, then mask the two octets like they did. I am not talking about searches that they did throughout their entire browsing session. For instance, if they searched for "nude Russian girls" and then searched for "outlook plugin", the company would have no idea that they searched for "nude Russian girls" because it has nothing to do with their Outlook plugin.

  6. IP Addresses and Phone Numbers Are Created Equal on Google Releases Analysis of Click-Fraud Detection · · Score: 2, Insightful

Much like how your celluar phone company prints out the list of numbers that called you, Google should provide a list of IPs that contacted the website with the search term. I don't see how it's anymore private than if you called a company because you found it in a phonebook and starting asking questions. What type of personal information is Google worried about releasing? For instance, if I search for "outlook plugin" and a company that sells the plugin shows up in the AdSense links on the side, and I click on it - how is that private? Ok, let's take it more extreme so I go and search for "russian girls", then I see Adsense links for that on the right side. I don't see how that is any different than if I called a company and asked for the same thing. Google is just an electronic white/yellow pages. If they just released documents with the request records most of this would be a moot point and people could cross-reference their Apache or IIS logs with Google's click logs.

FedEx uses USPS trucks and planes to ship items so you are still using USPS indirectly, whether you realize it or not. Notice that the Post Office doesn't have UPS boxes in front of them, it's because FedEx has a contract with USPS. UPS has sued to allow them to put boxes there, but so far the Post Office hasn't allowed them. I think there was an agreement recently, however, that will allow UPS to place boxes there. Also, I actually find it cheaper to ship USPS in most cases. Just as the article said, a lot of people don't ship large or heavy objects through USPS because of the restrictions, but all in all most packages are going through the USPS whether you realize it or not.

  10. Phone Line Not Always Required... on Movies Delivered Via Television Signal · · Score: 1

The phone line idea is not new. If you have a DirecTV box, it also requires a phone by contract. However, if you purchase movies and never hook up your phone line, the box does not have a chance to dial in therefore you do not get charged. This may be a design flaw in the DirecTV box. I wouldn't be surprised if this box works similary since most companies all borrow from the same fundamental circuitry. Why recreate the wheel? I cancelled my DirecTV service last October and never received a bill for the three movies I purchased because I never hooked it up to a phone line.

Who cares what China and India do. Outsourcing is going to happen whether we like it or not. I'm kinda glad there are less graduates in CS. Just because China and India have more does not mean they are /good/. Why do people equate China and Indian education to something near perfect? So we have a small percentage of the population that are smart. The people are the same there as they are here in terms of intelligence. There is not something special in their water. Remember, there are differing levels of intelligence.

Here is my viewpoint on the issue... I graduated in May 2004 with a BS in Computer Science from Florida Institute of Technology. Straight out of college, I was hired on by a local, small VoIP company. I worked there for about ten months before being laid off. My pay was low. I received about 30K a year. I had no experience. Fortunately, I am also an Officer in the national guard. Given the fact that I had a security clearance, I was able to land a subcontractor job as a software tester for one the US Government's new mission planning software. I don't like software testing at all, but I have a family and need money. I still make less than the average on CNN's website. Here's the bottom line: Everyone will not be a millionaire. The industry is in flux and I can guarantee you that you may have to move every few years. Yes, there are jobs out there. They may not be within 15 miles of you. I drive 100 miles roundtrip daily to my job because I could not get into a job locally. That is just how it is. Yes, you must love the job you do, but when it comes down to putting food on the table versus job satisfaction, I'll take the former. If you do Government work, you are mostly safe from outsourcing. Most projects are NOFORN or FOUO even classified, so they cannot be outsourced. You may have to bite the bullet to gain experience. We all had to do it. Remember: We weren't all Senior C# developers first. My two cents...
