Pretty much agree with that. As I said earlier, people are way too ready to be offended these days, often when they're not. They just feel they ought to.

The name refers to a non-consensual sexual intrusion, something you might consider light rape.
You think an upskirt (which are usually staged) is akin to rape? Wow.

Fair point but I would like to think that we've got past being horrified by anything remotely sexual. Let's be honest here, one of the biggest money spinners in the US is porn - people buy it, yet as soon as someone in public says 'panties', they're frowned upon as some sort of devient, usually by the same people who just downloaded MILF episode 3.

Why are phones, particularly the VM box that is more or less an automatic part of today's cell phone, so damn vulnerable?

All they did is access voicemail accounts which had the default PIN i.e. 1234 or whatever. Nothing clever. Once they had the mobile numbers, they just dialed in from another phone, access VM and entered the PIN. Simples.

  10. Sony = bastards on Sony Announces End For MiniDisc Walkman · · Score: 1

I had a minidisc recorder that had a software suite for loadng up tracks from CD etc. It also burnt CDs in ATRAC format for playback in their portable CD players. I burnt quite a few disks on the promise of better quality than MP3 and used this to master certain irreplacable tracks. Turns out, the DRM protection stops the disks being played on any other PC than the one they were recorded on. Didn't find that out until that PC was gone. Result, I've lost some very important recordings and it's yet another reason I now avoid Sony like the plague.

  13. The IT department are idiots on Yet Another "People Plug In Strange USB Sticks" Story · · Score: 1

Where I work, all the USB ports are disabled. The most you can hope from plugging anything into them is a recharge. If you *really* need to use a USB stick, you get an encrypted one from in house and your local permissions are tweaked to allow just that model and not much else. Plus you get a very clear message that if a virus does get onto the system, you're in a world of trouble, possibly dismissal.

    >I don't think that'd hold up in any court of law.
Impossible to say without knowing the contract's details. The view within the company was that S**y wanted to dump the game so used this as a cheap way out. My friend actually predicated this when the list of requirements came in - he took one look and said "This is impossible, they're going to cancel the contract in a few weeks'. And they did.
Trouble is, the publishing side is where the money is and most small-medium sized dev houses just get paid for each of the delivery points. Once the game's out the door, the income stops as it's a brave company that pushes for a % of the revenue as the game will only get awarded to the next development house in the queue, teetering on the edge and looking for a way to stay solvent for another few months.

  16. Not a great industry on The Dark Side of Making L.A. Noire · · Score: 2

I know a few people that work in the industry in the UK and their stories horrify me. Not so much the hours - they do work reasonable hours but that probably Euro law kicking in - more the stupid shenannigans the publishers pull. So many games have been coming along nicely then the publisher's marketing people start demanding wholesale changes, killling the game's playability.
They also pull stunts like demanding a rewrite on an impossible deadline then use the failure to deliver it on time as a reason to cancel the contract.
There also seems to be a trend to make dev teams redundant just before Christmas as the development houses finish the game for Christmas but can't keep ticking over waiting for the revenue so end up folding. He's lost his job 6 times as 5 were in November. Happy Christmas.
All jobs have good and bad but the games industry seems particularly badly run on the suits side by people that just don't get the end product and just know SKUs.

  17. Saw this coming on British NHS Patient Records Go To the Cloud · · Score: 1

Got a letter from my GP asking if my records can be computerised and shared around the country. I ticked the 'No' box and everyone thought I was being an idiot.
