Especially at a University full of "smart people". I have seen the exact same thing - systems with literally 10+ years of study data and not a single backup. Not so much in recent years, but even 5 years ago this was fairly common.
I have trained my users to store anything they don't want to lose in the directory that is stored on the server and backed up. But it took a while.
The University does have backup options I am sure. They can't force idiots to take advantage of them though. (I work at a University where they offer network backups and you would be surprised at how many people lose data due to dead hard drives and no backup.)
Jobs gets free passes on things that Gates, Balmer, and Eric Schmidt would be taken to task for every time. As far as Tech company leaders go, he is easily one of the most defended people. Sure, attacked often as well, but vigorously defended more than the rest.
Apple's highest market share peaked at about 16% in 1984 and by 1988 it was back down to less than 1%. ("Cloned" PCs had started to take off by then, and Apple was left in the dust by the sheer volume of them being sold.) Even the Commodore 64 had a 40% market share in the same time Apple was hitting it's peak 16%. (1983-84)
Not quite. The whole point of social networks is to share information. But ultimately you decide what that information is. There is some semblance of privacy, but the privacy rules change so I just always assume anything I post can be seen by anyone - either now or in the future. Once the toothpaste is out of the tube, it is almost impossible to put back in. I use Facebook for some things, but not to give the entire world a big glimpse into my personal life. I don't use my real name, which helps with keeping some things private and also cuts down on random idiots I don't care about from my past tracking me down. I also do not have any of my co-workers as FB friends, and don't allow family members I am not close with access to all of my info. This way I hardly ever expose information I don't want to people I don't want seeing it.
If you want privacy, don't post personal details of your life online. Don't assume because you set things to private that only certain people will be able to see them. Follow those rules and you won't feel so exposed.
When I was younger, I did just that - a blind taste testing using Coke, Pepsi, and RC. I was able to correctly pick all 3 types on 2 separate tests. I was mostly going off carbonation amounts and sweetness - they are easier to differentiate than the flavorings. Of course we didn't try to get tricky and put more than one sample of the same cola or anything, just a straight up 3 unmarked glasses of cola and you had to guess which you thought each was. But yeah, out of the 7-8 kids that all did the test, only me and one other was able to correctly pick all 3 both times.
Similar is not the same as identical. I can tell the difference between Coke, Pepsi, and other colas. If they were exactly the same, why would anyone prefer one over the other? Different flavorings, different amounts of carbonation, different levels of sweetness. Try a Red Bull cola sometime, or an Africola. They taste very different from Coke or Pepsi.
I am pretty sure that the military operates on a different set of rules than civilians do. That is why they have their own courts, lawyers, prisons, etc.
No, but when one replies to a person, and uses a quote, generally the person you are replying to is the one that made the statement you are quoting. But I see now that normal conversation and thinking are WAAAAAYYY beyond your meager capabilities, so I am officially filing you in the shit bin. PLONK!
Now you are quoting me on things I never posted? Wow, your reading comprehension is abysmal. Still waiting for you to explain how paying a "lifetime membership" and dividing that number by how many months you have had the Tivo service somehow does not equal what you are paying per month for Tivo. And I think I will be waiting forever seeing as you answer my question with quotes I did not even post.
HINT : I never, in any of my posts, stated
You also have to pay a monthly fee
Now you are beyond stupid, you are also a liar.
You also seem to be confused about Tivo - Tivo is a device, and also a service. The device does not work without the service. The service is not free. Whether you paid a large amount up front, a "lifetime membership", or you pay monthly, you are still paying for the service. The fact you do not pay every month has no bearing on the fact that you have paid for a subscription to the Tivo service.
Did you PAY for your "lifetime membership"? if the answer is yes (and we know it is) then you have a PAID SUBSCRIPTION to Tivo. Why is this concept so hard to understand? If it makes it any easier, divide the $200 you paid for the lifetime membership, and divide by how many months you have had it. The resulting number is what you are paying, PER MONTH for your subscription.
I don't think anyone with a brain is "Insisting that torrents are more frequently used for legal vs illegal file sharing", but there are some who insist that they are ONLY used for illegal purposes. This is equally as ignorant. There are legitimate and non-legitimate uses for Bittorrent. Yes the non-legit ones happen to out weigh the legitimate ones at this point, but there still are legitimate uses. But attacking Bittorrent as the cause for piracy is ludicrous. Software piracy existed long, long before BT ever did, and when BT is gone piracy will still exist.
And here I thought British spelling was funny because it tries to put an unnecessary "u" in everything, but now I see they are also adding "FUCKING" into their spelling? How are we Yanks supposed to keep up?
So the name your parents gave you at birth was schmidt349? You must have some strange parents. Or is there a possibility that that isn't your real name either?

Yet you still choose to willingly come to the "shit sandwich" site and participate. Does that say more about you, or the actual site?
I am not claiming that it is, but the topic of this conversation thread is market share.

I believe what people mean is "the day some Linux variant gets 10% share of home PCs".
Hey it only took Apple 20 years to achieve this, hang in there Linux.
Ever since Jaws 3 in 3D and Friday the 13th in 3D. If you want to see 3D used as purely a gimmick, watch either of those movies.
Something tells me "The Year of 3D TV" will be the same year as "The Year of Linux on Desktops". Both will occur after Duke Nukem Forever is released.
Spelling != grammar
So maybe you hate spelling Nazis?

You paid money to Tivo at some point. How is that not a paid subscription?
Calling you an idiot would be overly generous, and very insulting to idiots.

Well, I sort of figured the CEO of Google wouldn't have a lot of time to waste on Slashdot, but you never know...
I don't know that, and I didn't see him sign his post with it.

A shoutout to Highlights magazine. Nice!
