  1. Protractors on Anathem · · Score: 2, Interesting

Fraa Erasmas: "Our opponent is an alien starship packed with atomic bombs. We have a protractor."

That line, and everything after that point, made that book worth reading. It was frankly uninteresting until that it was suddenly made clear that the next 500 pages would involve defeating the opponent using applied and weaponised platonic epistemology.

I agree with the review to some extent, but having read the book three times at this point, I put this up with Snow Crash as an example of what Stephenson can do. Now can someone make a mini-series or movie out of his books already!

Yes, I wrote the TVTropes.org entry of Anathem and I stole some of it.

The only reason I responded was I could make this logical positivism joke I've had lying in my head for a few years. So we had similar goals.

  3. Re:Logical positivism to the rescue... on Is Mathematics Discovered Or Invented? · · Score: 1

Logical positivism asserts that only statements about empirical observations are meaningful, effectively asserting that all metaphysical statements are meaningless. Unfortunately, this fundamental tenet of logical positivism belongs to the family of statements that it asserts to be meaningless. As a result, the entire edifice of logical positivism vanishes in a puff of logic. This insight appears not to have occurred to the logical positivist school of philosophers.

It is usually done because the cretin cannot fatom the idea that a database op done correctly is atomic anyway so it needs no mutex Thank you, that actually solves a huge problem I have been having. Though the primary problem is that a construction engineer probably shouldn't be doing coding in the first place.

Is there any programming language/family that allows one to explicitly state which functions are stand alone and which one's are "one-offs"? I'm not a programmer, and most of my experience is with PHP and C, so I could be saying gibberish.
