Microsoft has saved us all once again. Well, the GP was suggesting that the OLPC project isn't about computers, it's about education. While you could easily argue that poverty isn't caused by a lack of computers, you'd have more difficulty arguing that poverty isn't caused (at least in part) by a lack of education. Now you could argue there's better ways to educate than the OLPC, but that's different than what you're trying to suggest.

Also, the second TV will probably be bigger or have some other whizbang feature which is nifty. So, in our bizarro world 3 years from now you could either replace your old TV with an exact duplicate which now costs LESS than $400, you could pay $400 and get something nicer, or you could spend $450 (which is worth the same as your previous $400 when adjusted for inflation at 4%) and get something EVEN NICER. Also, god forbid your priorities change or formats change, or whatever other thing might come along.

  6. Re:One word rebuttel to TFA on Long Live Closed-Source Software? · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's because trying to lead open-source developers is like herding cats. Unless you're holding their can of food, they won't go where you want. And if you can't make all of them focus on the single project you want accomplished, you don't get anything done without a huge mass of so many people that everyone can do what they please and you'll still have enough people going your way. This is precisely why there are companies who gladly hold the food by paying salaries to developers of open source software, so you can lead them where you want them to go. IBM, Redhat, Sun, etc. all make an excellent living guiding open source software where their business needs it to go. Open source software greatly lowers the barrier to entry into the market which, imho, increases innovation in how business is done. I mean seriuosly, I don't see closed source software making amazing technical breakthroughs either. I believe what the original author is seeing is the waning of the industrial revolution in which we're seeing an extensive slow down in technological wonders. Sure computers are getting smaller and with slightly different/better interfaces, but going from steam engines to cell phones was a VERY rapid ramp up... we just don't see that kind of thing anymore.

I'm not too worried about this. As the Core 2 Duo vs (what is AMD pushing these days?) and the gaming console wars have taught me, when it comes to consumer products the loyalty isn't that great, the better product usually wins. Of course how you and I define better and how the average consumer defines better might be totally different. Sort of like the PS3 is WAY technically superior to the Wii, but the Wii is kicking its ass in sales. *shrug*

I've personally had much better experiences upgrading software on linux than windows. In linux it's either yum update, or in the case of ubuntu a nice little gui system for always having the latest software. Conversely with Windows software there's usually registry garbage or errant dlls lying about after an upgrade/uninstall. I can't and won't attempt to argue your other points as I've found largely the same thing, but for upgrading software at least, linux is super easy.

A mortgaged house you rent where the rent is greater than the mortgage is an asset with positive cash flow on your financial report. Wealth is assets. Money in hand is a liability because it loses value over time.
