Am I correct in this? If this is true, I don't understand what the big deal is about migrating GCC (in particular) to GPL3.

The real story is how Microsoft changed its patent covenant, after the deal with Linspire was already finalized. Is Microsoft free under that deal to alter the patent covenant however they want - making it useless? IANAL but I do know that you can't make a contract that is contradictory to the law. For example, if I make you sign a waiver before bungee jumping but then replace your regular bungee cord with chain linked pretzels you can still sue me (assuming you survive the fall) because I have illegally created an unsafe environment. If Suse, Linspire or another company breaks the law, Microsoft is within their rights to sue them. A contract stating "I won't sue you for patent infringement" is not necessarily the same as "You are licensed to utilize all of my patents at no charge."

Excuse me, but, how do you reduce a CO2 footprint by removing algae that converts CO2 to O2? Two things.

First, the original quote is about reducing the NET CO2 footprint to zero. When you burn a tree that is carbon neutral because the released CO2 is absorbed by other plants. However, if you dig carbon out of the ground and burn it then that is not carbon neutral because that carbon was not previously part of the natural carbon cycle.

Secondly, the presumption I think is that people would be farming this algae for the most part rather than removing the naturally existing stuff.

If a developer is worth $150k (s)he will make that money if (s)he wants to. However, (s)he won't make that money being a developer for Microsoft. Nah, you'd make a feet class and a meters class. The meters.add() method would be over-loaded to accept both another meter object or a feet object. In the meters.add() method you'd do the necessary conversion (if any) and return a meters object with the appropriate value. Your way there's no particular reason that the a+b operation returns feett instead of inches. You chose it arbitrarily and that's confusing to the developer using your library/code. Overloading operators is an extremely obtuse way of handling this issue in an object oriented language.
