  1. Why Blue Ray should win over HD-DVD on The First Blu-ray Burner, Pioneer's BDR-101A · · Score: 3, Interesting

From the first releases of HD-DVD movies, even encoded with the more efficient MPEG4.

    The Last Samurai: 28GB,
    Mel Brooks's Blazing Saddles: 26GB,
The Phantom of the Opera: 25GB,
    Jarhead: 25GB.
    The Bourne Identity: 23GB
    Serenity: 20GB,
    The Fugitive: 18GB,
    Doom 17GB.

None of these movies could fit in a single layer HD-DVD, and some came very close to filling up the double sided one. Current capacity (double layer), Blue Ray: 50GB, HD-DVD: 30GB. but that's just the beginning. The highest achieved for the 2 formats: Blue Ray: 100GB, HD-DVD: 45GB. The theoretical max: Blue Ray 200GB, HD-DVD: 60GB. I'm really surprised that M$ and Inter support HD-DVD, obviously the Blue Ray has a lot more to offer capacity wise.

  2. Re:This is what we need, but named horribly on Pirate Party Comes to the U.S. · · Score: 2, Insightful

We are so accustomed to our government's BS, we are actually asking for it. Our government has been feeding us beautified names for a while now: - Patriot Act - Republican polls shown the more descriptive "Spy-on-all Act" name was not popular. - Medicare Medicine Bill = hidden name for more money to the drug companies; why else would the bill prohibit the governments from negotiating better drug prices. I wonder who thought of that rule! - Fair Tax sounds better than Sales Tax. Fair to whom is the real question. - We are fighting insurgents in Iraq, even though more than 90% of them are Iraqis! Oh and Iraqis are not in a Civil war, even though they are two or more factions fighting to rule the same country. Our "Civil War" was a civil war, even though the South was not trying to overtake the US governent, they were just trying to liberate from it. It's actually refreshing to see something boldly named to reflect it's real function. Pirate Party, I like it, now all we need is the Anti-Medical Party, the Freedom Party, the.... you know what, it's about time for a revolution, isn't it?

  3. Quote from the leader of Piratpartiet on ThePirateBay Will Rise Again? · · Score: 1

"When society sends its police at the young generation for listening to music and watching movies, it's not the young that are in error. It's society that needs to get a grip." - Rickard Falkvinge I think he offers a good argument.

  4. Re:More noteworthy... on Airbus Plans to Expand Cockpit Automation · · Score: 1

Almost in every case sited, the error was partly due to the pilot not knowing how the plane will react to his manoeuvre. Also missing is the numerous accidents that happen due to pilot error, but one thing is for sure, having the pilot and the autopilot/computer fighting over control of the plane is a disaster waiting to happen. I agree with Airbus though, get rid of the pilot. Planes could have flown themselves for years now, the main reason the overpaid passengers are there is to make the rest of the passengers feel warm and cozy. You can just have couple of pilots remotely take control of the plane in very extreme situations. Having the pilots on board make no sense whatsoever (they are still flying by wire anyway). While you are at it, get rid of the attendants too, I can get better service from a vending machine. Without all the fat, I could save me at least 10% on my ticket and the airlines will still make more money that they can use to make the computer/software better.

As a developer I think you are wrong! What the hell does what you say have to do with ODF?

  6. Pointless on Microsoft Claims OpenDocument is Too Slow · · Score: 1

What a pointless comparison. Who cares! I'm using XML daily, I even have to write XML Parsers for embedded applications from scratch. XML is all about standards and readability (otherwise we would all still be using comma delimited files) you make an XML standard that is neither readable nor makes use of existing standards and technologies, I don't care how much faster it is (which nothing in the article proves it is), I don't want it. Microsoft should first make a proper XML Office standard and then worry whether theirs is better than others. If ISO has any sense they will reject OpenXML.

  7. Scientific Atlanta vs Motorola on Cox May replace its own DVRs with TiVos · · Score: 1

The Scientific Atlanta (now Cisco) box that Cox uses is pretty amazing imho. Tivo might be slightly better in somethings, but I would not pay a pennie more for it. It could be worst, you could be stack with Comcast and their awful Motorola box. Boy, do those suck or what! Comcast inhereted AT&T's obsession with Motorola boxes for some reason. Every Motorola (formally known as General Instument I believe) digital box I have ever encountered was a miserable failure. Motorola should do all of us a favor and close their cable box division down.

  8. File and TCP/IP stack on Interest in Embedded Linux Remains Low · · Score: 2, Informative

17% of embedded market is absolutely amazing imho. Unlike PCs, there are many choices for an embedded operating system. Most commercial embedded OS vendors could not even dream about reaching such high audience. I've read somewhere (and I agree) that if you need a filesystem and/or a TCP/IP stack you should consider Linux for an embedded system.Maybe I would expand this to include a USB host. If you don't need TCP/IP stack/Filesystem/USBhost then my personal favorite is Labrosse's microC/OS-II (amazing collection of CPUs that will run this, starting with 4K-ROM 8-bit processors to PowerPC type processors, not many OSes can claim such diversity).
