I'm French. And sometimes when I look at some your Yankees comments, I feel like you effectively live in a different planet. No government-guaranteed vacation? at all? do you still claim to be leaders of the free world?
And btw, in France, someone acting like JWSmythe would be in most companies laughed at.
If we ever discover an alien civilization that's a peer to our own, I'm sure it will have an identical formulation of Pythagoras' theorem. ... unless this alien lives in a nonEuclidean space !
Here in France, we often have an additional layer between users and IT team that we may call "business owners" or "product owners". They represent users toward the developpers and are in charge of writing most of the specs, and run the User Acceptance Tests.
In my opinion, this is people doing this kind of job that should have had the kind of classes you are talking about. But the thing is that people doing this job have very different academic background : from business schools to software engineering, including maths or Computer Science,... and none of them, as far as I know, have been teached basics on software development cycle.
You guys don't seem to realize what/*really*/ rocks withe that phone : the Wi-Fi feature that allows you to switch on a cheap VoIP tariff while you're coming back home with a GSM communication going on. (In France, the price of a local communication with GSM vs. VoIP is incomparably more expansive)
In fact, this phone has been launched by the French Telecom provider Neuf-Cegetel as the first mobile/VoIP device in France ; and I believe it is sold around 200... with a 12 month commitment.
By the way, I have been told that the above described feature doesn't work very well for the moment.
Weird that nobody* seems to have noticed this wonderful app : Foxit PDF Reader .
It loads PDF files way quicker than the feature-bloated Adobe Acrobat and is totally free. Actually it's ery close to MacOS X's Preview, imho.

It's called "Groups", isn't it ?
There exists a blog (sorry, it's in French) aiming to share experiences about deploying F/OSS and expecially Ubuntu Linux in (Junior High) Schools.
