  1. Do you believe in the effectiveness of nanotubes? on Intel Experimenting With Nanotubes · · Score: -1, Flamebait

Well, if some sort of a speedup is an eight-year-old boy and a carbon nanotube is my penis, then yes.

  2. Re:Since when is linking a crime? on UK Woman Charged As Terrorist For Computer Files · · Score: 1

I agree. With due respect to Godwin, the masses in Germany were baying for some pretty messed-up stuff sixty years ago.

  3. Public websurfing on Web Surfing in Public Places Is A Way to Court Trouble · · Score: 5, Informative
Public websurfing is an inherently dangerous thing to do. If you don't believe me, check out the "security now" article on ARP cache poisoning.

    http://www.grc.com/nat/arp.htm

It's the scariest thing I've seen since the last time I was tricked into clicking a link to Goatse.

  4. Obligatory on Robot Swarm Shifts Heavy Objects · · Score: 1

Imagine a beowulf cluster of those things. Oh wait...

  5. 1.21 Gigawatts?! on Google Campus to Become Solar-powered · · Score: 1

Pff... you'd need more than 700 of them just to power a DeLorean

  6. Re:Way too dangerous. on Prototype System Blocks Digital Cameras · · Score: 1

As far as I know, visible light can't actually damage the human eye. It's ultraviolet that messes up your eyes if, for example, you stare at the sun.

  7. Slashdot's at it again on Plan For Cloaking Device Unveiled · · Score: 5, Funny

I long for a month where slashdot doesn't announce a new design for a cloaking device...

  8. Re: Reporting Vulnerabilities Is For The Brave on Reporting Vulnerabilities Is For The Brave · · Score: 1
Even doing that won't leave you competely anonymous. Most laser printers leave an almost invisible pattern of dots which have the serial number of the printer, date and time of printing encoded in them.

  9. voiceovers on Final Fantasy XIII Announced At E3 · · Score: 1
I'm a bit discouraged by the recent FF games, since there's no option to TURN OFF the voice acting. It sometimes feels more like watching a 60-hour movie than playing a game.

If there's one thing I'd like to see in this new game, it's some good old-fasioned *Text*.

  10. Bah! on New Congressional Bill Makes DMCA Look Tame · · Score: 1
"One would, for instance, create a new federal crime of just trying to commit copyright infringement."
Honestly, do they give a Nobel prize for attemped chemistry?

Incidentally, I reckon we'll be hearing a lot more about "IP crime". Re-branding it as some generalised "crime" will make it much easier to fight against than mere "piracy", which I guess most people would see as a relatively innocent thing.

  11. Re:If Madonna prices it, they will buy... on Music Downloads = Expensive Concerts? · · Score: 0, Redundant
    20,000 tickets at $100 each, totalling $1,000,000

    I think you'll find that's $2,000,000

  12. Re:If only.. on Mafia Boss Using Crook Crypto Captured · · Score: 1
"if Mr Mafia had used this instead of a crappy cipher from two thousand years ago then he might not have been caught."

If you read the article carefully, you'll notice that they never explicitly say he was caught as a result of his code being broken. In fact, he was caught because police tracked a load of laundry which was being delivered from his house to his hideout.

  13. Iranian Uranium on Mysterious 'Forcefield' Tested on US Tanks · · Score: 5, Interesting

Iran announces that it has successfully enriched uranium, and shortly afterward the U.S military announces that it has laser cannons and force-fields. Coincidence?
