I'm with you on the global warming bandwagon (as in, standing behind it and laughing at Al Gore) But I look at it in a different light, and hope something good will come out of it in the terms of energy efficiency. It doesn't matter how you slice it, the energy we are consuming is finite, and anything we can do to reduce our need for this finite resource is a good thing. I think the fear-mongering that is happening is the wrong way to go about it. And throwing billions and billions of dollars at a "problem" that hasn't even been proven to be a problem is not the way to go.

That being said, I would not agree that all environmentalists are bad. Look at the ever-so-recent acid rain/NOx/SOx issue with burning coal. That was a REAL environmental problem that was brought to light by activists pushing the issues.

I love my Alltel Razr. I can change the function of all the softkeys, re-order the menus, download my pictures thru bluetooth, the UI is fast, responsive, and intuitive.

As far as I'm concerned, Verizon can keep their phone and their service. Take everything I listed above about my Alltel phone and throw it in the trash. Their UI is complete shit, nothing is where you would think to look for it, it's slow as hell, I can't change the functions of any of the softkeys, etc, etc, etc. (no, I dont want to get pix and flix. I want to know where my fucking pictures are, and I want to be able to download them without having a text message plan)

I would agree, everything has it's price, and making it a requirement of obtaining a supplier contract would certainly coerce Cisco into coughing up the info. The amazing thing about how our government works: If you could convince Cisco to let the government build their own equipment you know damn well they would just contract it out to one of their defense contract mfgs. to build, which is more then likely the same company that builds them for Cisco right now.

Sorry, not going to happen. I've personally built and troubleshot their competitors (Juniper) equipment and we didn't even have access to the VHDL, Boot Prom, OS, or any other software documentation. There is now way in hell that they are going to hand this information over to the government.

Besides, the issue is not within the design itself. (I know, this point is arguable... but that is a different thread) the issue is non-trustworthy people building unauthorized reproductions of Cisco equipment.

As far as I know, high end products like Cisco are still manufactured in the United States. So if you want to ensure that you are getting domestically produced product you need to take over the delivery chain, not the production chain.

Leave the production to the experts, thats what they do. it is time to begin building robotic factories What do you think builds them? The only thing hand built is the high level assembly and inspection.

How about a process that takes the flue gas from a coal fired boiler and turns EVERY pollutant in it into a viable resource? (fertilizers, raw metals, etc) Where the only thing coming out of stack is nitrogen, water, and oxygen. Just do the research.

I'm not saying that there isn't a market for alternative energy sources, but why don't you coal bashers take some time out of your busy granola eating life to do some research into what has been done, or is being pursued in the coal-burning plants so you piss-ants can quit whining about pollution?

a wireless keyboard really doesn't provide enough of an improvement over a wired one to justify the security implications from using it.

Come on! There aren't people beating down your doors to find out your password for slashdot! And there are far easier ways to get your financial information. Take the old adage about outrunning a bear, you don't have to run faster then the bear, you just have to run faster then 1 other person. If you go out of your way to make sure your financial information is well protected, shredding your mail, paying attention to where your credit card is used online, chances are you are not going to get your information stolen. Its the dumb person next door that is going to loose his.

If you work in a business environment where you share private information, I think the 10-foot range you get with a STANDARD wireless mouse and keyboard is the least of your problems. What is more likely? That you have a rouge agent in your office that is going to get their keyboard hacked? Or that the dolt sitting behind that computer is going to download that latest and greatest toolbar for IE?

Call me an optimist, but everybody is not out to get you.

While I agree with you, there are a lot of instances where a wireless keyboard/mouse is overkill. It gets annoying having someone call me in to their office first thing in the morning because they can't log into their computer, only to find they haven't replaced their batteries in 6 months.

I do believe there are many instances where they are useful. Just remember, that even though your employees aren't always the smartest people in the world, they are still more productive whey they are happy. If all I have to "risk" is using a wireless keyboard to accomplish that, then I have had a good day. my 2c -Adam
