  1. Re:Awww on DailyRadar.com Closes · · Score: 1

I would also say they extended their coverage way farther than they should have. There's nothing wrong with a online magazine that covers one platforms(like PC Gamer Online) or even many platforms(like Next Generation Online), but Daily Radar had to be the end-all-do-all website that covered Games,Showbusiness, Technology/Gadgets, and even its own humor section. They had way to big of staff with alot of time on their hands. Especially one that was funded by banner ads

I knew their death was on the wall when you couldn't browse the site with out getting pop-up ads all over the place. That was already with the banner ads that were already plastered on the page and clever little link box ads for Online Gambling (Did they even think about their Demographic audience?) that would pop-up if you left your mouse cursor idle.

Screw Daily Radar and screw Imagine Publishing for creating it. I still blame the death of many good websites(NGO, PC Gamer Online)on Daily Rader and it won't be missed in my opinion. There are much better websites out there.

Intel has a pretty good marketing department behind them, I can't figure out why the hell they don't try and spend some money educating the masses on what really pushes chip performance.

Ahh, but if Intel did that people would know that the 1.4Ghz P4 isn't that much better 1.2Ghz Athlon despite 1.4>1.2. And they would also know that the CPU isn't the bottleneck in PC's today; it's the memory and hard drives. That certainly wouldn't help sells of the P4.

Bottom line, marketing is about telling people about your product and why they should buy it in the fastest way they can. ( well not all the time, but people do have short attention spans when listening to ads)They don't have the time to explain the subtleties of CPU performance(cache, pipelines, instruction sets, etc...)and Joe Consumer doesn't really care to hear it either. He just wants a quick an easy way to see how fast his 'puter is going to be by spurting out some large number.

And as for those blue guys...uh well I have no idea why the marketing dept thinks they'll sell P3's. They should stick with the Dust Suit guys dancing around, they're alot more hip than those blue dudes.

  7. Re:Napster complaints: on Emusic Tracking MP3s On Napster · · Score: 1

And how, dare I ask, does one accomplish that?

There are many simple things that you can do to make sure the file is the full song. Just look at all the search results and see what the most common song length is and there you go. Otherwise, lookup the song on some super huge online CD store like CDNow. They usually list the CD the song is on along with the length of the track.

Damn it would be nice if some of those peering clients indicated if a file had Variable Bit Rate encoding, any fixed rate sucks rocks.

Ahh, but you can do this with the Napster client. Just check for Bitrates that aren't in the set of numbers offered by most commerical MP3 encoders(ie 32,64,128,160,192,256,320, etc...). Those are usually VBR MP3s...

Nintendo used to have a patent on the cross design on the D-pad so all of Nintendo's competitors had to make different versions of the D-pad as not to be sued. IIRC, their patent has expired on it and you now free to make your own cross-looking D-pads. Yippie!

  10. Re:Viability of CD-Rs as a legitimate backup mater on DivX ;-) Deux Update · · Score: 1

I'm sorry to inform you of this, but CD-Rs weren't made for this sort of use. While the data can be stored temporarily, you're going to have a horrendous amount of trouble in 5+ years, whenever your CD-Rs become unreadable.

I'm just curious where you got your information. Most things I've read about the durability of CD-R's put their lifespan 10-20 years. Besides 5 years down the road(or less), Hard Drives will reaching the TB range and DVD-Burners are going as cheap as CD-Burners. CD-R's will be phased out by new technology long before they degrade to the point where they are unreadable.

If you're planning on remaking your entire backup library every 5 or so years, then go for it. Otherwise, I suggest using backup tapes or going with a commercial data-backup vendor solution. (Those DO exist, right..?)

I don't like the idea of using tape drives to back up data. They're usually based on propritery(sp?) technology. What happens if the company that makes the tape drive goes out of business? You're screwed...That's not going to happen with CD-ROM drives.Plus it's much easier to port and of your archive data to anyone's computer.

Whoa, the N64 cartridges didn't even have that much memory. One the largest carts out there is 256Mbit(Nintendo likes to makes the size sound larger by using bits instead of bytes) and that only 32MB...Im pretty sure there are larger carts out there now, but nowhere near 350MB given the current pace oh how fast those carts grew(Mario 64 was only 64Mbit = 8MB)
