NO, please don't expand the duties of the electorial college. It exists to solve a problem that no longer exists, that of electing presidents in a country where it can take days to travel or even communicate.
Part of the reason for the electorial college is to try and strike a balance between states and the people. If one of the states had 90 percent of the population and you based the outcomes directly on the results that one state would rule over the rest. If all of the states had an equal vote states with a smaller population would have a disproportionally large amount of power. Lack of communication only hurts campaigns not the results from elections, Does it take less time to 1)vote, tally the results, and send a handfull of representitives. 2)vote, tally the results, and send a messenger with the results. My guess is they would be fairly close timewise.
I think the problem with political parties in general is that they seek power which mean that trying to actually do something constructive takes a back seat to getting more party members elected. I think the pdf I linked to was right when they said the forth reason for the electorial college was.
gentelmen should not campaign for public office (The saying was "The office should seek the man, the man should not seek the office.")
that is why google is building the new complex. http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/06/13/business/se arch.php
I think they are eithier using it as a defenisve lookout, or they are using microsoft employees because they intended to strike first with detailed maps provided by the defectors.
Unless I am mistaken, couldn't the electoral college be a form of meta-moderation that could be expanded to cover all federal elections. I don't think that the problem is with the election system, it is with the party system. Has anybody noticed that as soon as a party looses they claim that the system is broken and don't realize that they are just not using decent candidates. Capitalism and Democracy in the U.S. are failing for the same reason they require informed people, and the average american I meet doesn't care about learning anything let alone researching two competeing products or politicians.
so exactly what information is being broadcast early?
Your intention to buy, my dad enjoys going to auctions and bidding $1 on boxes he finds interesting. If you bid too early people might think that they missed something important that was in the box and bid against you. I think it might be something to do with mob mentality(or at least the part that has brain activity inversely tied to the amount of people present) because if someone in the group has placed a bid it must be worth something, so I should try to outbid them.
Their complaint seams to be that a person who said He was a high-school senior was actually 19.
In the school district I went to you had a september birthday your parents could chose to enroll you in school at the age of 4 (you would be 5 almost all of the school year) or 5. If you had a birtday in oct., nov., or dec. you would get enrolled at the age of 5. I don't think that 19 is unreasonable for a high school senior.
I just happen to have a september birthday so I was 19 for all but a few weeks of my senior year.
there is a gpo option not to automatically reboot after windows update, by default I belive it asks every 15 minutes and if you don't respond it reboots. computer configuration>administrative templates>windows components/windows update
Although I am not the anonymous coward, I too have computers running slackware. Can you tell me the steps I need to take to upgrade to this cool new and totally free OS called Linux that you talk about.
I am the exception to your generalization, I am under 30 and I used to listen to my dad's 8 tracks and records. For new music I like the higher quality that cdda gives, but for some of the old stuff it does not sound right if you remove the hisses and pops and scratches.
It might be just me but I think newer audio equipment might sound better, but they don't seem to be as indestructible as some of the older equipment I have seen.
When the corporations with their army of lawyers and legal fud wants to persuit this against people, expect it to be fully enforcable.
If I understand what the lawyers have posted you would be wrong. Vengie seems confident that if he had used a different law he would have won but not gotten money. Could it possibly be that corporations actually choose to take people to court over the laws that they break instead of the law that might get them the most money.
Anything that gives one party an advantage over another is a travesty of justice- and makes the system useless. Bribery vs good lawyers means nothing in this context; the end result is the same. Government of, by, and for the corporations- where being a citizen is absolutely worthless.
I would not call it a travesty of justice, if you are blatantly wrong you will lose regardless of the money you are paying lawyers to represent you, Martha Stewart, Kenneth Lay, Jeffrey Skilling are recent examples of people who could probably hire any attorney they want but they still managed to get convicted.
The reason that corporations have better representation is because they are willing to be selective. How many skilled jobs are listed in the classified section require no experiance. The more you are willing to pay the more selective you can be. Another advantage to retaining lawyers is the fact that they will help you avoid making the blatant mistakes that will get you convicted, the skill of the attorney matters more in the grey cases and not the black and white ones.
Corporations also survive because people buy what they sell, the easy way to take down a corporation is to stop the money from flowing in. If being a corporation gives you power over the useless citizen start a corporation. Once it takes off you will not have to worry about being a citizen anymore. Nobody is forced to be a worthless citizen because the money is out there to start a buisness with if you fill out the paperwork. what is required to succed is the proper skills to play in the market.
Corporations and People that make money rise to the top, while Corporations and People that lose money sink to the bottom. There are two ways to make money luck and skill. Those that rely on luck make the money fast and lose money fast, those that have skill make money slow and lose money slow. If you take the money from everybody and redistribute it equally my guess would be those at the bottom will return to the bottom and those at the top will return to the top.
Well, see, that's the point, isn't it? The cybersquatters are infringing on trademarks to begin with. But you can't touch them because they're outside your local city government.
The question states that the buissness has not started yet, which would mean there is no trademark to infringe upon. I would assume that any name that the squatters have would fall under the catagory of discriptive marks if I understand this definition properly, which would take years to aquire the trademark. http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/metaschool/fisher/dom ain/tm.htm
Assuming that a trademark qualifies for protection, rights to a trademark can be acquired in one of two ways: (1) by being the first to use the mark in commerce; or (2) by being the first to register the mark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ("PTO"). 15 U.S.C. 1127(a). Remember, however, that descriptive marks qualify for protection (and can be registered) only after they have acquired secondary meaning. Thus, for descriptive marks, there may be a period after the initial use of the mark in commerce and before it acquires secondary meaning, during which it is not entitled to trademark protection. Once it has achieved secondary meaning, trademark protection kicks in.
I also disagree that lawsuits are won by the fact that the judge and jury are bribed. There is some corruption in the system, but I would say that a larger amount are one because the lawyers of bigger companies are on retainer. If the law firms are being paid a retainer fee then they know eventually they will need to go to court, so they probably can do some of the research while waiting for the case they will have to go fight. Bigger companies can probably afford a better lawyer. If I was buying a steak dinner for my hypothetical girlfriend (we are still on slashdot) which would give me a better meal Waffle House or a Steak House? Which would cost more?
Have they? Do they include the date that the registration will be expiring if you do not pay their price so that you have a chance of grabbing it again before they renew?
The people that are squatting on slashdot.org have failed to inform me of the expiration date, So I was forced to ask bash whois slashdot.org. It seems that I have to try on 04-Oct-2006 04:00:00 UTC if I want to renew before they have a chance.
And run the risk of a competitor buying up the same name and slandering his business, you mean.
I am not sure how you can slander using a domain name, you could publish libelous information on the website and be sued accordingly. If a competitor has a domain the best they could do is sell similar products or services as long as they do not infringe on your trademarks.
Actually, we DO have metamaterials. They even work pretty well for microwave frequencies.
That is what I am using for my new weight loss program, I am going to sell TV dinners coated with these metamaterials. Under this plan you can eat as much as you want as long you can get it to the proper temperature in your microwave.
switches are just single purpose computers there is no reason they can't have thier own battery as well.
I think it would be nice if every power supply had a battery or capacitor large enough to power the computer through a shutdown, modern programs and filesystems seem to handle random improper shutdowns better but it is nice to know everything was shut down properly.
as far as laptops as servers go the only difference in software between a server and a desktop are the programs that are installed. I have a pentium 4 1.7 ghz desktop and an amd athlon 1800+ laptop and they seem to give me about the same preformance. I would guess that if you found a laptop with the same specs as your current server you would see similar results.
It seems that my local cable company has it on thier webpage[1], and it is only $1.75 a month[2].
I am guessing if people want to use custom boxes cable companies will find a new way to make a profit. when cable ready television came out cable companies said you still needed a box for pay per view, and later digital cable.
From what I have noticed cable companies have no problems raising rates, if the loose enough income from the box you rent they will raise prices everywhere else.
Why not use irda? Television remotes don't need extreme acruarcy and they work across rooms.
Somebody has already stated that planes have an two layers of metal. You can shoot the beam between the layers and use mirrors to make turns. The layers also block signals from inside and outside of the plane.
When you've done this you have to connect to Windows Update and download 60MB+ of updates (multiple times, because Windows Update has a bug where it misses updates - you have to keep going back after reboots until there are non left).
Most of the time I have used windows update you have to go multiple times for one of two reasons. Some items seem to be mutually exclusive, the other times they are updates for your update(how is it a bug in windows update, if you don't have the update installed it doesn't need updated).
This seems to me to be an area that linux is better. Since most things are independent they can be updated with little impact on the rest of the machine, and the latest update usually fixes all previously known problems without the need for repeated updates.
The way I see it this explains why vista is taking so long.
Microsoft in an effort to show off the advancements they have made are going to give the goverment a copy of longhorn to put on one of the spare computers they have. The goverment will then create a user account for everybody in the country and force every company to join in the giant active directory structure. In the future if you need authenticated you give them your social security numer and then they will hand you a keyboard to type in your user name and password. This would also eliminate the need for cash, credit cards, and checks because all of your information would be stored in your roaming profile.
Microsoft was able to sell this plan because 90% percent of computers already run windows, so the computers are already there. You would also get the advantage of the windows firewall and anti-malware programs to prevent anything from going wrong.
The goverment would also have to ban linux because anybody trying to reverse engineer the protocol is obviously trying to steal everyone's identity.
I thought that the social security card or the sheet it is attached to had the words not to be used for identification on them.
sombody should inform all of the big corporations that they have made a small mistake and that the social security number is not a means of identifacation for anybody outside of the social security administration.

would the cars run a little more efficient when it gets cold because of superconductivity reducing the resistance to 0.

After we convert our cars to run on this new energy source will there be a public outcry each time the price of a slider goes up at whitecastle?
