Right now the only "reasonable" solution to this problem is to make sure only vetted software can run on your hardware.

I am of the opinion that it is not a matter of "reasonable" solutions, I would argue that anybody smart enough to make a product that mixes hardware and software would understand the spirit of the GPL. IMHO the time used to find loopholes in the GPL could have been used to come up with several ways to follow the spirit but not have any trouble following the obligations of the company.

Is there a specific order I need to get my hardware up and running? What happens if I run into problems? I need to find places where can I get help. How do I get online to ask for help if Linux isn't up and running yet? Even if I have a 2nd computer how do I transfer data between the two if one doesn't have drivers for the communication outlets (NIC, CD, etc.) yet?

Most of the questions depend on which distro you choose, I use slackware so I get to do most of the install an administrative stuff at the command line. If you choose a different distribution thinks might be the same or they could be completely different, I think when I tried suse once everything was done in yast. clearly people will pay way too much to make sure they get a ps3. I have been at physical auctions before and one of the things they do if they want to sell a bunch of boxes in no particular order is have the normal bid process, then when they have a winner the winner chooses how many boxes he wants at that price, after that they ask if anybody else wants in at that price, once they are done with that they start all over. In a computer implementation of this you would not have to rebid because you have a clear record of who bid what amount.

If Sony could do this they would make more money and stop the people who resell, because if you are the wining bidder you have already demonstrated that you are willing to pay more.

If I had to run this program I would not let the stores sell until they auction site is selling them for just above the normal price. To save on shipping costs the demo ps3 could be sent to game stores to be used as the mechanism for entering the auction and the stores could take a cut of the auction price buy having the winners show up at the store to take delivery.
